You'll receive a lot of answers that will start and end with "oil." But the answer is far more complicated than that.

Saddam Hussein was a totalitarian dictator who supported terrorism. Recent intelligence disclosed by captured al-Qa'ida documents show that he was in support of the Taliban and al-Qa'ida. Furthermore, additional documents have revealed that he did in fact have a WMD program, (also confirmed by UN weapons inspectors.) He had shipped many of the weapons in pieces to Damascus and Syria via commercial air transport, and ground transportation. This information is not mentioned in the mainstream media, because they don't want people to know that the intelligence (not just US, but global IC entities), was correct. Saddam was responsible for the genocide of the Kurds, and enacted torture and murder of innocent Iraqi Shi'a.

Finally, Saddam ignored and defied UN resolution after UN resolution. Upon pressure from the United Nations, he simply became more resistant.

Again, a lot of people will say this is about oil. But the war on terrorism is really what it's all about. After all, we're not at war with Venezuela, and they have oil too. We're not at war with Russia either, although they have one of the largest oil reserves on the planet. This war is about protecting our national interests and those of our allies, against those who support and defend Islamo-fascism.

The US is no longer fighting with Iraq, it is trying to keep the peace while Iraq builds its own security.

The US invaded because Saddam actively supported terrorism. The US and many other governments also thought Saddam was working on, or had, weapons of mass destruction. However, I don't think that is why most Americans supported the invasion. We were concerned with Saddam's support of terrorism, and the idea that Saddam was creating a haven for terrorists to work from. That is why Bush's approval ratings weren't dependent on findings of WMD. They fell long after we found out there were none to be found.

If Iraq had complied with the UN when the inspections where going on we may be seeing a different story.
Everyone yells they lied to us there where no WMDs found no they didn't find them most likely because instead of going in right away we gave them plenty of time to get them out of there and they do have sympathizers and allies.
We are at war because they were and still are a threat to us here in the US. 9-11 opened the door for every demented terrorist group

Saddam was committing genocide and allowing terrorist networks to funnel money through his country. He did have weapons of mass distruction at one time -- he used them against his own people, however, the UN reacted slowly and he was able to get rid of them. The US and about 30 other countries are working to create a democratic government in Iraq which would lead to greater stability in the Middle East. Pockets of terrorist networks don't want that, and THAT is who we are fighting. We aren't against Iraq or the people of Iraq. It's a lot bigger than just this, but this is the condensed version.

Oil. Oil is energy, energy is money. All wars can be broken down into this simple formula.

They got it.

We want it.

Let's go get it.

There are dozens of psychopathic leaders in the world and the USA has not moved on them. Oil was the reason for going in.

The world is in Peak Oil and Iraq has the largest reserves that have not peaked. Controlling this oil is critical to US strategic interests. The Carter doctrine is quite specific about this.

It's sad but in order for people to drive Hummers in the USA, soldiers have to drive Hummers in Iraq.

The US, having put Hussein in power, tolerated his mass killings (as it has done with other tyrants) right up to the point whre Iraq was going to switch its economic standard from the American dollar to the Euro, which would have devastated tne American economy.

Suddenly, Hussein's actions became objectionable, so the US intervened, with the Bush Machine ignoring intelligence reports so it could justify the invasion.

The U.S. and Iraq are not fighting. The U.S. military is fighting Iraqi civlilans who are resisting the change from the suppressive Hussein government into some other form of government - hopefully for one that is for the Iraqi people.

The US is an occupier, which took over the country unilaterially. The current administration failed to wait for conclusive evidance of WMD's/terrorist before they went in and killed a bunch of iraqis and a bunch of american soldiers.
Now, America (and her allies) are stuck in Iraq because to leave would be to allow a civil war to happen in the already unstable middle east.

No, lol, Iraq is not fighting. Its defending. US is fighting an elusive war on terror, infact created mostly in the minds by its own think tanks and the governing goons. The major idea is to control the world, by controlling its resources and, in the process, silencing any opposition to their programmed targets.
