This decision depends on whether you want performance for quality.

Look at the following two scenarios (assume you want to spend $500).

If you are looking for quality, I'd say go for a starting system for Dell, you'd probably get a 40-80 GB harddrive, a cheap video card, 256-512 MB RAM, a 17" CRT monitor, CD RW n DVD, and perhaps an Intel Pentium 4 processor with 2.5gHz speed.

For performance, go for a emachine computer. A computer at the price should get you a 17" CRT monitor, 512 MB RAM, CD RW (and maybe even DVD RW), Pentium 4 processor with 2.8gHz processor or a bit faster, an intergrated video card, and up to a 120 GB hard drive.

As well, Dell probably has better service and warrantee and is much more dependable. If I were you, I would spend the extra money to get a longer lasting PC.

PS. eMachines is a division of Gateway, the two companies combined a few years ago.

Emachines are good, they are cheaper and usually have more stuff then Dell. But don't get me wrong Dell are good too, but I know someone that got a Dell with a flat monitor the monitor went out three times and she had to get it replaced everytime. It's kinda hard to get a hold of Dell representives to take care of any problems. I don't know how it is with Emachine representives though. If you buy a Emachine from Walmart you can return it within a limited time as long as you keep the receipt. Just in case you aren't satisifed with it. But if you buy from Dell its hard to return they make it really hard to. Hope this was some help. Good Luck. :)

I've loved every Dell I've owned (5 of them so far). Emachines are very good for cheap machines. I'd go with the Dell and a big warranty.\

And Emachines isn't made by Dell. It's now a part of Gateway.

I had 2 Dell computers die on me in less than 4 yrs. So, I am not going to endorse them. My friend has had an emachine for several years and has been very happy with it. I currently use a Compaq Presario myself, and am very happy with it. But go with what ever brand has all the requirements you want at the best price.

I gues I am the odd ball here. Build it yourself. All you need is a "+" head screw driver and haft the money you will spend on the same level computer at Dell or Gateway (Gateway owns eMachine) and a weekend to tweak. You will have a killer machine.
At the link below go to the hardware forum and ask the same question. You will have a blast.

Good luck.

e machines give you more bang for the buck...they are made in china if that makes a difference. dell is a good computer but over priced in my opinion and they are NOT as trouble free as they like to pretend they are...customer support isn't great unless you pay for it. for myself...i think i'm going to look at HP for my next computer. right now i think they offer the best compromise of value vs price. and i'm going with an amd processor and not a pentium.
