they make little cork screw types of things with a cute little button design on top that you twist thru the arm cover into the arm of the couch.

yep, Velcro sounds like the best way to me too. You can buy the kind that sticks with selfadhesive or even stitch it onto the chair arm and the arm of the chair. Wal Mart or any craft store should have it.

I suggest duct tape, glue, rubber cement, a large rock, im sure some rope would work, try rubber bands, long nails, screws, did i say glue?, throw them on the floor, then they cant fall off anymore

In fabric stores you can purchase what they call "T" pins. You angle them in to hold arm covers in place.
