Say there's 2 people walking downa road on a movie.. now with full screen all you would see is those 2 people, with wide screen you'll see anyone next to them, the stores on the side of the road and so on.

Wide screen is the direction of what films are heading these days. Full screen is what has been the industry standard but for a little while now it has been changing to wide screen. Full screen is in the ratio of 4:3, which fills the entire frame on a standard square t.v set. Widescreen is in the ratio of 16:9, which will be a long strip down the middle of a standard square t.v set. But this is simply because the t.v set was made with the intention of displaying 4:3 images. You can select on your dvd player for the image to be displayed filling most of your 4:3 frame, but it cuts bits of each side of the 16:9 image. So if its just going to create problems you might ask what the point in going to widescreen is.. Well its because it enables the film to get close in on the action whilst still keeping a large amount of the surrounding area in the shot. But the main reason is because 16:9 is the closest ratio to that of the human eyes feild of vision (well actually 19:9 but 16:9 is more practical for filmmaking), so its like you are watching it from your eyes instead of through a camera. Eventually 4:3 will be ruled out almost completely and everyone will have widescreen televisions.

A full screen movie will fill a traditional tv ( the old square kind), but a wide screen movie will look like a rectangle with black bars on the top and bottom. Full screen movies normally lose a great deal of the original picture, so I prefer to watch movies in widescreen.

FS=full screen
fills the whole screen
WS=wide screen
shows movie or show with the black stripes on bottom
producers of movies like wide screen the best because it shows the movies as "it was meant to be seen". This is the reason that you see it on a lot of DVDs.

In widescreen the picture is usually 16 x 9. While full screen it is
4 x 3. So in widescreen you get more side details on the screen.

The widescreen version of any movie will show slightly more material on either side of the screen. Many people prefer this for this reason. However, the actualy picture does not fill the top and bottom of the movie or television screen. For this reason, many people prefer "standard" format.

full screen as been scaned and croped to full the whole TV screen so you do not see all that was there in the theaters. Wide srceen is just like the movie, evrything is still there.

Widescreen doesn't cover your whole tv screen full screen does. I think its made for that movie theater effect but to me it can be frustrating at times.

16:9 rather than 4:3 for the screen size ratio. You don't have to lose any of the picture as some people have stated, you can watch it as normal, stretched, cropped, cinematic ..... they're very flexible & quite common in the UK.
