I don't understand why people think that Jesus was the Messiah. The Messiah is supposed to bring world peace. Jesus had very good teachings about peace but he didn't actually bring it. I don't mean to be offensive, I just don't understand. What is so special about Jesus?

But Nate, there was no prophecy of a virgin birth to begin with. In Isaiah 7:14, the verse reads, "Behold, the alma shall conceive and bear a son and shall call him Immanuel." For some reason, Christians think that alma means virgin. But the word is used as part of the hebrew phrase ha-alma hara, meaning "the alma IS pregnant." Because this is the present tense, it is not a prediction. Also, elsewhere in the bible, when specification is needed, the hebrew word betula is used for virgin- not alma.

Why do Christians believe.....

Christians believe Jesus was and is the Messiah due to him fulfilling ALL 300 prophecies in the old testament. No person has ever come close besides him. To get a understanding of how rare this occurance is, a statistician calculated the odds of just 8 of them. He came up that for one person to have fulfilled just 8 of them is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. Also, if anyone thinks that he just up and desided to make it a goal to complete all the those prophesies, several of them were well beyond his control. Like his birth place & time, his betrayal, not having a single bone broken, his burial, etc.

None of the ancient prophecies stated that he was going to bring world peace. Many ancient interpreters of the law thought that he was going to create an earthly kingdom upon his arrival. Even his disciples didn't understand it at the time until his death and resurrection. His second coming won't bring world peace either, until after the final battle between good and evil.

If you really wish to know more, pick up a Bible and actually research everything said about the coming of the Messiah. Many have doubted, but noone who has tried to disprove who he was as ever been able to do so. That is quite the feat for 2000 years of doubters. If he wasn't who he said he was, should someone have been able to disprove it by now???

you are right alma means young woman denoting a wife not a virgin
jesus was dead for some time before christianity started
i dont think jesus meant to start a new religion he was just a kid without a dad/ parent
jews feel that jesus's mom slept around and claimed "god" did it thats why he was born in a barn
nobody would let an unwed mom in their home - too many questions
my kids dont know about sex and i dont want em to know as long as possible

thats why jews dont think he is the messiah
he was just an unfortunate kid kid who's mom messed up

efw is absolutely right. Jesus never claimed to be the Messiah. At least not in the accounts that remain of his teachings. My greatest hope is that one day, a gospel will surface that the Roman Church hasn't managed to suppress, which will give us more insight into what Jesus was really trying to do.
