I was asking a lady at babys r us today about bottle sanitation. She said that bottles are sanitized enough in your dishwasher if your water is hot enough. But, she said NOT to put the nipples in the dishwasher. What's the best way to sanitize them, then? (I don't want to buy a sanitizer if I don't have to).

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Boil the nipples and bottles and rings. 3 to 5 minutes should be sufficient.

Sanitizing Baby Bottles

Boil the nipples, bottles, and rings for about 3-5 minutes. This should be sufficant amount of time to sanitize your bottles. You dont need to buy one of those machines because it is easier to sanitize your bottles that way. Or if you use a dish washer almost every night put them in the dishwasher because I can tell you that the dish washer works best.

Bottles and nipples can be sanitized in the dishwasher. Just make sure your dishwasher detergent has chlorine bleach in it. Most do, but you have to read the labels to be sure on a few of them.

To sterilize nipples (MUCH better than sanitizing them) boil them in water for 5 minutes.

The best product I have seen is Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags by Medela.

"Unique and powerful, Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags eliminate 99.9% of all harmful bacteria and germs from most breastpump parts and feeding accessories. Fast—complete in just 3 minutes. Unique—faster than boiling and more effective than dishwashing. Easy-to-use—Just add water and heat in the microwave. Economical—5 reusable bags per box (up to 20 uses per bag = 100 uses).

Or, you could just boil the bottles and nipples for 20 minutes. :) But these bags are GREAT! You dont have to worry about forgetting about them. You just nuke and out come sanitized bottles! Yaaaay!

My aunt just boils a pan of hot water and puts the baby bottle nipples in it for a couple minutes then she takes them out and washes them with a nipple cleaner with soap and rinses them. My cousin hasn't got sick yet and she is only 9 months. Good to you and your baby.

Congrats! Your due date is the best one ever (it's my b'day, that's how I know). First, wash the nipples and nipple rings well in hot, soapy water and be sure to use a nipple brush to scrub the nipples out with. Very important - you don't want to take a chance on any formula drying on the inside of the nipple and clogging the hole, or (ugh!) harboring germs. Rinse well, and then you can either boil the nipples and rings for a few minutes, or bring an aluminum(not teflon-coated) pan of water to a boil and drop the nipples and rings into it for a few minutes. Using a clean pair of kitchen tongs, lift the nipples and rings out of the water and allow to dry on a clean, dry cotton tea towel (the kind that is NOT fuzzy). Best of wishes to you and the newbie, keep us all posted please!

Streilize them. Put the bottles and the nipples in a pot of water and boil them for approximately 1-2 minutes.
