I have been slowly redoing things in my home. I just painted my kitchen, and I absolutly hate the counter-tops. They are cheap, and seam like plastic! I found some spay paint that is speckled, and I think that it would be beautiful on them. I was thinking that if I sanded them, I could paint them. If I do this, is there a clear coat that I could put over it? Would the paint scratch off? This may be a really bad idea! Any suggestions?

you can paint them but there are tons of things that can go wrong. You say they seem like plastic some plastics dont hold paint well some will even melt if the wrong type of paint is used and become for ever a sticky mess. If you decide to try the paint I suggest a few heavy coats of a good waterproof polyurathane. There are lots of cheap ways to refinish existing cabinets,I seen a cool one on hgtv where they bought some old plates at a junk store and put chicken wire stapled to the top of the counter. Covered the wire with grout and used broken piece of the plates like a mosaic tile. You could also consider just glueing a new type formica over the existing cabinets. there are hundreds of different types of formica and its real easy to apply just need a router tool to trim it with, hope this helps ya good luck

particular it truly works properly in case you prep them provide them a sanding with some sand paper, wash properly save on with a arborite primer, then save on with a countertop paint...particular they make it. positioned a sealer on after because it makes it final longer and makes cleansing it less demanding. I sponge painted mine in some diverse hues and it seems impressive..I unquestionably have had it approximately 2 a million/2 years and it nevertheless seems sort new

Whatever you do don't paint them. Consider covering them with ceramic tile it works quite well.
