The Boppy pillow is a definite must have for any new mother. It worked really well for me as a breast feeding mother and then when we switched to bottles cause I had enoughed stored it was so comfortable for my husband too, then it works for tummy time and helping them sit up when they are learnig!!!! I aslo loved the baby care kit with the little clippers the nose syringe, the warming pad, great for tummy aches, gas drops!!!!!! infant tylenol, and all the stuff needed for cord care!!! A really good breast pump is a good idea if you are going that route, if not them some bottles, nipples and a bottle brush and dont forget some diapers, need lots of them, and diaper rash cream!!!! I could go an and on, but these are some of the basics that I didnt think of when the time came. I think the only thing i received that was not useful was the wipe warmer and the bottle warmer that plugs into the car??? used it once for a jar of food, took forever to warm up and did not stay warm very long.... Good luck!!!!!! congrats!!!!! (unless you are shopping for a gift then congrats to new mommy!!!!

If you want a bassinet try to go for a play pen that has the bassinet on top! That way you have the combo thing and it is used longer and takes up less room. If you are breastfeeding, a Boppy comes in handy (even if you are not they are still great to have!) You can also register for toys and things for baby (think teething!) because i got these at my baby shower... It is good to have that stuff on hand. Things like gas drops and lotions, baby wash and powder are always good to get! With our last daughter, my sister got me a basket of stuff and I didn't have to buy baby wash till well after she was 18 months! Blankets: you can never have too many! By the way you don't need but a couple of packages of newborn size diapers! They grow quicker than you think! Size 1 doesn't last much longer... Baby booties are something that you really don't need.. they are too easily kicked off! Socks are the same way so you can try to get more of the outfits with attached feet on them. I always put socks on my babies under their feetie outfits. I also never used the baby hats that I had. At the hospital we used them and then when we got baby home, hats never seemed to stay on their little heads... By the way, here is a tip: keep all of your diaper stuff(diapers, wipes, powder, creams) in a basket. That way it will all be together when and wherever you change baby. I also found out that wipes aren't the best to use on newborns (or bigger babies!) because they irritate bottoms. Try using warm wet rag instead. Burp rags and bibs are a must have! Onesies are too. Baby bath tub is a must have also!

What I will say is that one one person sees as not needed are life savers for others. It will really depend on your lifestyle and YOUR baby. I found a wipes warmer to be a life saver at 3 a.m. My diaper champ is great. Everyone told me I didn't need a changing table (I was told I would just use the bed or floor), but I find that I use it the most. I would say take advice from friends and family about what you need, but just because they say you don't need something doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a try. I, didn't ever use my baby carrier (the kind you wear), but my friend swears by it. I did find footed PJ's to be great. COAT HANGERS! I would register for a few different types of bottles so that you can find out what kind your child will like I would suggest that you leave things in their packages and leave tags on until you use them. If you find out you don't need them you can exchange them for diapers! I would agree that you shouldn't be afraid the register for expensive things (if this is your first baby). Family and close friends may get these for you.
Some things not to forget to register for would be bottle cleaning supplies, first aid kids, burp cloths, and some toys for newborns (they are important). Oh yeah.....one nice thing to have is an extra SMALL diaper bag. You need a big one for all day trips, but a small one is great for when you go out for short trips.
Congratulations

Must haves are diapers, wipes, bottles (even if you are planning on breastfeeding they come in handy and you just never know! Its nice to have at least a couple) pacifiers (even if you do not plan on using them!!!) receiving blankets, regular blankets, high chairs, swings, all the big furniture, bouncy seats, care kits that include shampoos lotions etc, clothes especially things like onsies etc.
There isn't very much that you do not really need when it comes to babies. Almost everything comes in handy! I would stick with color themes and not character themes etc. It seems that with all except one of my children I changed the theme at least once after I had them to fit their personality better and then I had all these things that I didn't have a use for in another theme. It is best to just go with colors and then chose a theme after they are born! Toys are not really necessary in the beginning and neither are stuffed animals.
Remember to focus on larger sized clothing too. So many people will be giving you smaller clothing but the baby grows so quickly and before you know it they will be in a 6-9 month and you will only have like two outfits in that size LOL!!!

BOPPY!! Those round pillow things that go around the moms waist! Wonderful!!
It helps support the baby and its great for breastfeeding.
The diaper CHAMP! Works great. Keeps the smell out too. Works SO much better than the diaper genie... WAY better
I think the wipe warmer is something you don't really need. I have one and I never used it. Although some may like it I guess - to me it was just a waist.

The *only* absolute essentials for a new baby are clothes and diapers (and a car seat if you travel by car); everything else is optional. But I would definitely want a baby carrier (I prefer a sling); it is something that will come in handy for traveling, as well as around the house.
Bottles are *absolutely* unnecessary. A nursing mother *never* needs to give her baby a bottle. They are put on "must-have" lists by people who don't support breastfeeding.

I loved my baby swing. Saves your life! Now they have very convenient travel swings. I would recommend registering for a breast pump, stool, and breast shields if you're nursing. Its really expensive when you get to buying all of it. Register for a LIGHT stroller. So light that you can pick it up with one hand! Heavy strollers are really frustrating when you have to deal with all of the baby gear. A bobby pillow is a MUST. Have the person throwing your party have a diaper raffle. Any person who brings diapers gets entered in a drawing for a gift card. You can just make it worth $10, but you'll get tons of diapers. And if you don't have one, register for a camera... it goes so fast... capture every moment... :) Best wishes.

A must have is the Diaper Champ!!!No special bags and it works like a champ.Don't need pretty bibs! The best ones were plain old terry cloth ones in a set of five given to me at my shower, really wish I remembered who gave me those they are the most absorbant, and wash well.Another don't need are really dressy outfits for the first 3mo.

You really want diapers, bottles, blakets, clothes 0-6 month, swing, stroller, carseat, highchair, are all must haves.
Shoes, bottle dish drainer, ect.. you can usually tell if it is unnecessary, just remember they won't play with toys right away so maybe one or two rattles or teethers would be great. Oh almost forgot a bottle washer, cheap but very necessary.
