stick with Honda or Toyota. You can drive them into the ground with little maintenance. They also hold their value better than the others you mentioned.

Well, I dont know what you had that was American that broke down...but my Fathers 97 GMC Safari just turned 200K and still runs perfect...4 repairs since new. My 98 Ford Escort Wagon has 134,000 on it. Still runs great! averages 34-36mpg and has had 3 repairs since new. Oxygen Sensor, Radiator and Alternator. Total repair cost since new under $350.00. To be fair though...an Oxygen Sensor is a wear item. I am not sure how much more reliable you want! The last Ford Van I had...we sold it at 310,000 miles still running strong. My Sister drove a Pontiac 6000 LE up to 240,000 miles and only bought another car because she was tired of it. Honda and Toyota build reliable cars. This is true. However, they are about as exciting as a refrigerator. BORING!!! Talk to mechanics...When they DO break...they usually cost 2-3 times the cost of the comparable repair on an American car. If you want an inexpensive reliable used car, get a Ford. They last just as long as anything on the road, but dont suffer from the interior quality problems GM had back in the 90s.
If you insist on buying Asian cars, check out a Subaru. Subaru builds Great cars and SUVs. All of them are All Wheel Drive as well! The Forester is 'Car and Drivers' best small SUV for 3 years running!

I have a 1991 Honda Accord for sale with 193k on it. Runs great, averaging about 28mpg in the city. Paint is fading badly on the hood and roof, but other than that it is in pretty good shape. Automatic, power windows/door locks, cold A/C, etc.

Toyotas last a really long time. Take care of the body and the motor will last a lifetime.
