I agree use white distilled vinegar with a hot wash and you can do either sheets or towels during this and then allow it to dry very well.. vinegar added to your washing water will take out any stale damp or mildew smells or even oil stains and seems to sweeten everything making it all smell better including your washer. We use white distilled vinegar in each load especially work clothes, towels, sheets and underclothes.

1) Is your washing machine tied in with a soft water set up in your home? If so, it is normal as it washes itself ocassionally and uses the washing machine to flush the watet thru it.
2)If you do not have a soft water system, then QUITE possibly, your machine is NOT draining properly. Difficult to explain what t do. Is it a machine where you can see whether or not water is standing after the washing it totally finished? Is the water gone? or is some standing? If standing, you should disconnect and reconnect the water drainage hose at the back of the machilne.

If you have a sink in your laundry room, sometimes the water backs up into the drain causing a mildew smell. I have had that problem. I ran a little bleach into an empty load and washed on small load, then I put some bleach down the drain and let sit for a few hours. Then rinsed with hot water. problem solved

Run some White vinegar through the wash. This works great for taking the smell out of cloth diapers, and after you wash them your machine doesn't smell badly either.

Everybody told you how to get rid of the smell and no one told you how to keep it from coming back.

You need to use it regularly... at LEAST once a week to keep water from stagnating in the machine. Second, and more importantly, make sure there is a "P" trap (the U shaped line) that keeps gasses from feeding back through the machine from the drain line. Good luck.

You need to empy the overflow which contains all the rubbish and junk that collects in a washing machine as it clogs up the worse the smell gets.

Add a cup of white vinegar to your next load of wash, this gets the soap buildup out of the drain pipes and keeps the smell away.

Try an empty wash cycle and put a cup of baking soda in the water.

Put bleach only, no laundry in it. Just let it cycle like you are doing a load of wash. You might also try vinegar, it's supposed to get rid of odors.
