So the current political party, which considers ITSELF to be the ONLY cure for terrorism, can eavesdrop on opposition candidates and their supporters and interfere with their advertising, speeches and fund raising to cheat at elections and better stay in POWER!!!

Any 'terrorist' who would use a phone in the United States for planning the commision of a crime needs to go back to terror 101 for a refresher course in methods. The patriot act is one more step towards a totalitarian state, and is likely to never be repealed.
A good idea? phone tapping has been used since the beginning of telephone service, most often illegally, and has seldom turned up any evidence of intent to commit a crime. If there is reasonable suspicion, yes, go ahead and tap, otherwise no. There are a large number of ways to send messages, Including encrypted in photos, by radio, and carried by couriers. the cost of monitoring every bit of information transferred by all methods would be staggering, and professionals would slip through the net quite easily.

Do you know how many terrorist, predators, and just down right evil people there are in this world. I would rather the FBI listen to my phone conversations and not hear anything but bull **** and then turn around and listen to a conversation between two terrorist or predators and hear something that could harm me, my family, friends, or possible children. That is why I think it is a good idea.

The government assumes that its citizens want to be safe from crime and terror.
The government also assumes that most people are not criminals or terrorists.
The government assumes that the criminals and terrorists do not want their phones tapped......because then the government would know what they're up to.
The government assumes that the law-abiding citizenry won't mind a bit of invasion of its privacy if the government can catch the "bad guys" talking or writing about plans to hurt us and the country.
These are pretty big and important assumptions that the government is making.
Some citizens assume that the government does NOT have these rights to spy on its citizenry.......thus making the government work harder and slower to find the criminals and terrorists.
The government is paid for/by the citizenry. The government IS the citizenry...........just a bit more serious about this stuff.
Both "sides" are right..........yet tension is evident.
I suggest that everyone be careful of what they say on the phone or type on the internet if you do not want the government to mis-understand what you are up to.
If you are a "bad guy"........I hope the government catches you and punishes you. I pay my taxes for them to do this.
Of course, if I did NOT pay my taxes they would call ME a "bad guy" and punish ME.
But that is a different question..........isn't it ???!!!

It would be a good idea if you wanted the government to be allowed to spy on anyone they want, whenever they want. Unfortunately, we have documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which call for, among other things --- freedom of expression, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, freedom of assembly and religion....you know, all that stupid stuff.
Oh yeah... and also the right to Life, LIBERTY and the Pursuit of Happiness.
The Patriot Act is more like the kind of laws they had in Nazi Germany and the USSR. It's evil.
You little kid reactionary jingoist neocons really scare me and make me fear for the future of the USA.

they had done it before, but the only difference with the Patriot Act is now, they don't need a warrant sign by a Judge anymore...I can not see what a boring job that would be to have to listen all day long to stupid conversations...they need to find personnel who can understand at least a couple of Arabic languages...

To hear up on terrorist plans and if anyone is planing a big operation to cause destruction. Tapping helps the FBI know and prevent it to their best ability.

It makes me uncomfortable that we are losing our right to privacy, punishing all for the sins of few. With technology, there are no longer any secrets.
