Don't hold it up to the light because the government did not put the secret strings in bills back in 1981.

It may be fake but I doubt it a counterfeit wouldn't be so worn, but a bank teller or a good cashier has a special pencil that tells if it is a real bill or not.

As for value unless it is a star note it doesn't have any value over face.

Security threads and water marks didn't exist in 1988. They didn't come about to the 90's. The easiest way to tell is the paper. If you're not sure, hold the bill in one hand and another bill (doesn't have to be same denomination) in the other hand. If the paper doesn't feel the same, one is fake.

Hold it up into a light. I don't know when they started imprinting the little line into them but you could see one. If not, look for other little things in it closely- see site below. Last resort- take it to the bank. What I want to know is where you got it that you would even question it?

I if you take the dark side of the bill and rub it on a white piece of paper, the ink should leave a mark. With real money, the ink never dries. Thats the way I check all my bills from being fake.

Take it to a bank and let them examine it. They are experts in such matters.

Take it to the bank. They will be able to determine if it is counterfeit and would gladly do so.
