Now I am not making a joke here. The facts are that eating bananas will repel insects. It takes about an hour for the effect to take place and one banana is enough to cause the effect.

The company "Burt's Bees" makes an excellent all natural insect repellent. I go camping a lot, so trust me, it works. It's main ingredient is Citronella oil.

There are natural products sold at www.kapipenya.com that are supposed to repel insects, but because of the danger in contracting West Nile Virus from mosquitoes, it is necessary to use a product containing DEET to completely protect yourself and your family.Natural products do not contain DEET.
There is a device called "Mosquito Ultrasonic Repeller". It is battery operated and you can wear it around your neck or hang it on your porch. The ultrasonic sound is supposed to deter insects.
I understand your reluctance in using DEET, but it is certainly the lessor evil if there are reports of West Nile Virus in your area.
Good luck !

I used to wear patchouli oil on a daily basis as a perfume, and during that time I never had bug bites, ticks (I was an avid hiker), mosquito bites, etc.

I've always heard eating tons of garlic helps. Even garlic pills help. Best of luck! The mosquitoes here carry us away!
