The term, culture shock, was introduced for the first time in 1958 to describe the anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new place. Culture shock is very natural occurence when traveling to a new culture. Keeping an open mind and being flexible will help you adjust.

I've experienced culture shock a few times in my life. The first and worst time was when I first moved to an Inuit community when I was 19 years old - different language, way of life, beliefs, values, food, etc. It took several months to adjust and feel comfortable. I experienced culture shock again, though not as seriously, when I spent some time in Cuba.

That is what happens when you take a person out of their home environment and culture and plop them into a completely new area and totally different culture. It's even worse if the person has never dealt with other cultures before. It's really difficult to get by in a new environment of this kind with laws, speech, and beliefs all so different from your own. Happens here in the US all the time with refugees and immigrants of all types. It would happen to me if I suddenly got moved to another country. I don't know the language, I don't know the customs, and that makes me feel pretty lost. That's culture shock.
