yes there is. You can check with your state. Pretty much all states have a website where you can check to see if they are registered to do business in the state. Chances are that the company you are looking for is registered to do business in your state. This will be the case for a privately held company or a public company. If you are trying to find information about a public company, you can go on their website and look for their investor relations link and check out their financial statement. This will give you information about the company and its performance etc. Also, if the company is public, you can check out EDGAR.gov and www.SEC.gov.

Not that I'm aware. Many small business work under something called a DBA (doing business as), a document that is filed with the local county. Articles of incorpration are drawn for some businesses and those are filed at the state level. Neither of these things are registered in a national database.

I think only publicly traded companies are subject to federal oversite and would have nationwide records available thru one of the exchanges and their federal regulating bodies.
