Horcruxes are magical objects in the Harry Potter stories by J.K. Rowling. They were introduced in the sixth novel of the series.

Description:
A Horcrux is a magical object created through the use of the Dark Arts by evil witches or wizards who wish to avoid death. To do so, they conceal part of their soul within an object — the Horcrux — that is usually hidden away in a safe location.

Thus protected, they become immune to death while it exists. Even if their bodies are destroyed, part of their soul remains earth-bound and undamaged. However, the destruction of the creators' bodies leaves them in a state of half-life, "lesser than the meanest ghost". Lord Voldemort was left in this state when his attempted use of a Killing Curse on Harry Potter backfired upon himself.[HP1]

Horcruxes are vulnerable, as is seen with Tom Riddle's Diary[HP2] and Marvolo Gaunt's ring[HP6]. Destruction of the Horcrux destroys the fragment of soul contained within it, ending the protection it provides, and rendering the creator mortal.

Lord Voldemort is the only wizard explicitly mentioned as having created a Horcrux, and he is the only wizard known to have created more than one.

Creation
Creating a Horcrux requires an evil and violent act: the murder of an individual, which is "the supreme act of evil", that "rips the soul apart". The soul of the creator is split, and a spell is cast to infuse one portion of the soul into the intended object, which becomes a Horcrux. This magic is called "the most evil and unnatural of the Dark Arts". Professor Horace Slughorn tells a young Tom Riddle, "the soul is supposed to remain intact and whole... splitting it is an act against nature". It is intimated that Voldemort became less human with each Horcrux he created [HP6].

There is no apparent limitation on the nature of items that can be made into a Horcrux - even animals can be used. Lord Voldemort, because of his own arrogance, chose objects of significant sentimental or historical value - objects "worthy of the honour" as Albus Dumbledore put it.

If you're asking what a horcrux basically is, it's an object someone can hide a piece of their soul (or as some stories refer to it, a piece of the heart or other living body part) can be stored away and kept safe so the person who possesses it is kept alive so long as their horcrux is kept safe.

However, if you mean, "what are the seven horcruxes of Voldemort and where are they most likely located", then based on what we know so far they are probably as follows:

1) Tom Riddle's Diary, destroyed by Harry Potter in the Chamber of Secrets.

2) Marvolo Gaunt's ring bearing the crest of Slytherin, destroyed by Albus Dumbledore.

3) The Locket of Salazar Slytherin; currently located underneath the boiler of #12 Grimmauld Place.

4) Unknown artifact, most likely either a yo-yo or thimble, or else a relic of Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Probable location, Albus Dumbledore's office, Hogwarts.

5) The Hufflepuff Cup. Location unknown.

6) The Snake Nagini, alive and well.

7) Lord Voldemort (he has to maintain part of the soul in his own body).

*8) Unknown object, most likely located in the ruins of the Potter house in Godric's Hollow... but most likely not VOLDEMORT'S horcrux.

Remember the prophecy and the events which made Harry "the boy who lived"... if the magic Voldemort was using backfired and didn't just go astray, the Horcrux would have been created in reverse as well, and since it was not a choice of the person it was made for, his soul wouldn't have been damaged by the deed (a piece of it would have just been secreted away)... and no one would know of its existence or the need to possess it to kill Harry Potter except for Voldemort, which is very likely why either must die at the hands of the other... because now Harry and Voldemort are the only two alive who know where all the parts of each other's souls are to enable them to finish the job.

There are seven, right? So 1) Nagini, 2-5) something from each of the four houses (the locket that was gone, possibly Gryfindor's sword, plus two others), 6) Tom Riddle's diary, and 7) Voldemort himself.
