Earl has the right answer, you've got to stop ALL leaks before the cooling system is going to work properly. If it's still leaking coolant, it's also sucking in air when cooling down. Air in a cooling system is going to cause hot spots, affect thermostat operation, and overheating. HTH! Good Luck!!

Does it have an electric radiator fan. Could be the fan is not coming on causing it to overheat and loose water. This could also explain why the temp is coming down when you are on the open road because you are getting enough air flow without the fan.
Could be a fan switch, could be the fan motor. If the fan is coming on then I would look at the radiator itself. Have you ever used a stop leak type product. The problem with those is that they coat the entire inside of your radiator kind of insulating it so it does not give off heat as well. But when you are on the open road your getting a lot of air past it to cool it off better.
Just a couple of things to look at.

It could be an air bubble in your cooling system.
if your SUV was really low on water, air bubble can get trapped in cooling system. when the bubble is in the block the engine runs hot, when the bubble works its way to the radiator it pushes water out of the system onto the ground.
the best way to get rid of the bubble when the engine is cool stick a garden hose with water running into the radiator reservoir start the engine and let in run. It you see the level in the radiator go down and then minutes later over flow thats a good sign you have a air bubble. leave the hose run in the radiator until it does not do that any more.
or
take it back to the person who fixed it for you it you paid them they
they should have taken care of that.

A crack in your radiator or a busted hose or worn seal could be the source of the leak.

if it is doing ok on open road and not going slow or in traffic it is your fan
your car relies on it at low speeds to cool off the water but at high speeds you already have enough air blowing past you radaitor which keeps it from running hot
