There were far fewer "back-street" abortions before abortion became legal. The number has exploded since then.
Also, deconstruction of the family was basically the point of legalizing abortion. Since this little bit of social engineering has become common knowledge, I think we would be well served to make abortion illegal again.
Note that this is likely to happen. Or rather, Roe vs Wade was based on fraud. If the case is re-examined, the Supreme Court will have no choice but to set it aside (since we no longer have a majority of liberal scum on the bench, we will get a fair hearing on this). This will simply remand the issue back to the states, who will then pass their own laws with regard to this.
Further, the Supreme Court actually does not have the authority to make decisions like they did in Roe vs Wade. Many of the states are tired of legislating from the bench and are planning open defiance (at least one state has already done this). There is no mechanism for enforcing compliance, BTW....NONE. If the states decide to ignore the court, that will be the de facto end of the Supreme Court except as it pertains to its original function (deciding on the contitutionality of federal law). I think this is very likely to happen within the next few years.

I'll be up front and say that I am against abortion.
Having said that, people will get abortions whether or not it is illegal. It is especially easy now since you can take a certain combination of birth control to induce an abortion rather easily.
Having said that, we shouldn't make laws because things are convenient or because we can't stop people from doing them. We can't stop people from speeding, but does that mean it would be a good thing to do away with speed limits?
There is nothing good about having an abortion. Nobody wants to have an abortion. However, the facts are that 1/3 of all pregnancies will end in abortion. That's 1 million babies in the US annually.
To answer your question, though, I think the answer is yes in some respects. In the speed-limit example: if we had been without speed limits for the last 50 years, would people become more moral if we suddenly introduced speed limits? I see no reason to think they would be less moral. I think some people would be reminded more often that we have limits and rules in life and we have to be accountable. The same would be true with any rule.
In response to kadel's "wisdom" above, I think people SHOULD be embarassed to get themselves unexpectedly pregnant. That is the whole point. Without laws and rules, people will continue to do what they want without fear of any consequences.
We have turned sex from something beautiful and special into something that anyone can do anytime with anyone without any consequences.
I feel sorry for the women who got hurt by "back-alley" abortions. However, two wrongs never make a right. It was wrong to have sex without thinking responsibly first. It was wrong again to try and abort the problem instead of dealing with it. I can't say that the women deserved what they got, but they knew what could have happened before they had sex and chose to do so anyway.
I think that older people tend to think that if abortion were illegal again that everything would be like it was 50 years ago. Not so. There are far more social programs, a lot more TOLERANT people, and a lot more acceptance today. 50 years ago you would have to look hard to find a single mom, but today you would have to look hard to find someone who DIDN't know a single mom.

Morale would not improve because an immoral person will always be immoral Furthermore, those who are raped by immoral people and cannot mentally handle a 9 month pregnancy may resort to doing things such as running to illegal backstreet doctors or taking thier own lives. Making abortion illegal is not , by any means enlighten societies morals. You have to remember women have a right to do what they want to do with their bodies, It would probably be far more responsible for all to use birht control and birth control should be obtainable to all and thus the decision to have an abortion would be moot because all pregnancies would be wanted. My point is , in a perfect world everyone has morals. however man was born from sin therefore the world is far from perfect and takinfg away a womans right to choose is not going to solve this very large problem

How can you prove something like that?? The US was never a totally moral country. Not when abortion was illegal, not when prohibition was in effect, NEVER......The US will not necessarily be a more or less moral society with or without abortion. It takes more than one issue to make a society moral.

This guy has 31 antiabortion and antifeminism questions. It is like spamming yahoo answers. Nevertheless, for the reasonable people here, I will answer the question.
The US was not more moral before abortion. There was just a lot of hypocrisy and lying. I remember life before legal abortion. Wealthy women went out of the country to have abortions. Other women who became pregnant went to a home, often run by nuns where they were made to feel like whores and the children were put up for adoption. A friend of mine was raped by a man who stalked her and she went to one of those homes and put the child up for adoption. She never found out what happened to him and wondered about him all her life. The stigma of being found out that she was pregnant was too terrible. She would have never been able to get a job again and her family and friends would ostracize her. That's why women got desperate and used coat hangers or went to back alley abortionists. A woman I went to college with bled to death after a back alley abortion. Her body was found dumped after the abortion went wrong. Men were forced or tricked into marrying women they did not love, resulting in a miserable life for all concerned.
You have no idea what you are talking about. You are obviously a very young person who has no idea of what it was like back then.
I note your judgemental terms-men who sleep with women are womanizers. Women who sleep with men are whores. By the way, back then there were lots of men who were married and slept with other women and left them on their own if they got pregnant.

I dont think that morals would improve. Abortion availability isnt the reason that children or people are sexually active in this country.

I highly doubt that morals will improve. Marijuana has been made illegal, but people still use it just as frequently. I don't doubt that people will still go through with abortions.
