Sci-fi or thrillers? Well, it's not Sci-fi so much as paranormal and/or fantasy, but Neil Gaiman is a great author. American Gods and Anansi Brothers are his two most recent adult books. Neverwhere is also very good.
Michael Crichton has written some great books that have become movies.
Marion Zimmer Bradley did a complete Darkover series that was sci-fantasy depending on which book you read.
If you want to start researching more, subscribe to Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine. They have strong writers every month in both genres. (http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/index.htm) It may give you a good idea of what you'd like to start with.
Also, while DaVinci Code by Dan Brown is popular right now, and it is a page turner, there are others out there that may be better. One is called The Rule of Four by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason. Also The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.
Good luck and have fun looking for good books!

If you are truly into Sci Fi I would recommend the Dune novels by Frank Herbert. Some of the Heinlein novels are great too, my favorites are "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" and "Stranger in a Strange Land."
For more satirical Sci Fi I would suggest, Terry Pratchett and the Discworld series--my favorites in that series--"Mort", "Witches Abroad".
Or Neil Gaimen, "American Gods" and "Anansi Boys".
Or more towards fantasy--a collaboration by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett called "Good Omens" you will love it.

I would definatly suggest Dan Brown Novels they are excellent. If you want a fairly easy read try something like Harry Potter or so you want to be a wizard. THe Life of Pi is a very good book. I would also suggest The Curious Incedent of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon I know it sounds stupid but it is a very touching fiction story. Its also kind of funny.
Just whatever you do don't read the Hitchhicker's guide to the galexy it is a boreing and slow read.

Mav is right. Read George Orwell's "1984" and personally I would suggest Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" and the sequals. All are amazing books.
For fantasy books, I enjoy the works of Piers Anthony. There are many with a basic storyline set in the same land, mystical Xanth. The first book is "A Spell for Chameleon". I really enjoyed these books.

I suggest checking out the two non-religious based novels by Dan Brown - Digital Fortres and Ah I can't remember the other one.
The religious based one are good too if you can put aside the contiversty around DaVinchi Code and just enjoy the novel (much better than the movie) and the first one is Angels and Demons.
