Im a first year apprentice in electrical and I have expeirence in estimating and they want me to go into the off full time and learn it. Should I stay doing the electrical and get my jouneymans license or go into the office and learn estimating. And if I go into the office is there any advice about the stuff?

I'm 57 and in all my years I cannot remember, ever, seeing an employment listing for vaciencies for an experienced Electrical Estimator.

I have seen employment listing for Journeyman Electricians.

When times get tough and new construction dies down, who do you think will be one of the first to be laid off. If there isn't a demand for Electrical Estimates then your history.

Your apprenticeship is only 4 years. You can do the Estimating job after you have your Journeymans License.

I did something simular when I was younger and in less than a year I was out of a job due to the economy. They didn't put be back in the Apprenticeship program and laid me off.

You will have to decide what is best for you. Just be sure you evaluate all sides of the situation before making the decision.

oddball is right on target. you can always learn estimating later. right now you need to make sure you get a strong foundation in the fundamentals of your chosen field. i do estimating all the time as a sideline but i couldn't do well if i didn't know the ins and outs of doing the job in the first place.
