Exactly. It was in the past. Why now are they claiming it. It has been over 200 years. As soon as developers came and bought the land for a big price the natives are protesting because they will get a HUGE settlement. I think I know what area you are talking about. It is an unbelievable situation.

No child should be held responsible for its father's sins; however, legally, this sadly isn't so. So, in a strictly legal sense, the Canadian Indians probably don't have any right to their lands. In a more moral sense, those ancestors were probably cheated and tricked into signing away their rights to their lands. So, the descendants ask for their land back because it's the right thing to do on the government's part, and they feel that they have been cheated.

They signed those treaties thinking the treaties were actually worth something. Unfortunately, the other side had no intention of honouring the treaties. Then there was all the fighting from the white people who forced the natives off their own land.

my ancestors did not sign my family away they where taken out of their home land beat and put into slavery forced to work allday with no pay!!!!!!!! the english and germans took away my ancestors homeland sure they had thanksgiving and what not but after that they stabed us in the back they took the skills we taught them so they could live and they used them against us!!!!!! every since they have destroyed and puluted our home land!!!!!!! dont ever ever say that we "claim" to have rights to this land we have more rights to this land the others it was ours first and they stole it!

Have you ever had somebody " pull the wool over your eyes ". The aboriginal people, back in the days when the treaties were being signed, did not have any idea of how to read and write, they trusted someone to interpet most agreements and usually signed with an x to add insult to injury!

There are treaty rights, which was the payment end of the deal(s) made between the government of the day to the tribal group(s) giving up the rights.

There are other rights, which have been awarded or returned because the payments weren't made.

For the same reason black americans can claim a right to certain privileges in the US since their ancestors put their blood, sweat & tears into building it up.

Well it goes like this. The white man came taketh away..Red Man said no bang..White man build raid road, make lots of money and give non away..Starve many and now they have to move or be destroyed..Years later "White Government" feel bad about past and reissue deeds of trusts back to them for owner ship of land that his how it has happened...Simple Politics at its best...

Because Candian citizens will listen to them blather on about their rights ... and will try to appease them. I'm working on my own list of grievances for Canadians.
