I am thinking about accepting a management position and would like to know what you all consider a good boss to be

The only way for you to know what makes a good boss is for you to remember what it was like being the "underdog". I've worked for a lot of nice people but they were terrible bosses because they forgot what it was like to be in my shoes. When I accepted a management position I tried not to forget and things ran so much smoother for me. The people that worked for me seemed much happier too.

My boss at the moment is great, the best I've had.
- She's approachable
- She genuinely listens
- She is quietly aware of what we're all doing.
- She's fun; we can have a laugh with her, and now and again go for a drink or meal as a group and she just joins in (though it's in the back of all our minds that she is Boss!!!)
I think it's down to personality really, there are techniques out there but think of "The Office": some people just can't carry off the techniques because their personalities get in the way!
Best of luck if you accept the new position!

A good boss is fair and always listens without necessarily agreeing. Be available to listen.

I find that people I supervise respond well when I praise at least twice as often as I correct. If correction is necessary I try to let them know what they are doing right before telling them what they need to correct. I then find a time later in the day to comment on another thing they are doing right.

Also show yourself as a part of the team. If extra hands are needed to preform a task, offer yours.

Please DO not have favorites. I work at a gym and my managers have favorites. That does NOT look good and its just flat out rude. Just go in and give everyone a shot and a chance. Be your self too. Good luck!
