My husband wrecked a couple of days ago on his motorcycle and his road rash looks bad. Neosporin seems to be making it look nasty instead of healing it.

I guess you could say the Neosporin commercials are really working because people seem to think it's "good" for everything!! It's only suppose to kill bacteria from an infected or inflammed site. You are right; neosporin in an area that is not infected or inflammed will make the wound a mess causing deteriation of new skin cells. No peroxide or alcohol either on clean wounds. OK...now here is what you need to do:

Wash the areas with antibacterial soap (like Dial) and water; pat it dry and cover with telfa pads (or any wound care pad that says "non-stick") and dry bandages. You should change the dressings one time a day. If you see that any area is becoming really red or increased drainage; THEN put on the Neosporin in that area only. Wash your hands before and after doing a dressing change to prevent introducing bacteria to the area.

Good luck!

If neosporin makes it look worse, that dosn't mean that it is. Keeping it dry, and putting on dry sterile dressings are good. Put just a thin layer of the ointment on the wound, so it doesn't stay "wet". Has he been to a physician? It can take weeks to heal some abrasions depending upon how deep it goes, and how much of the skin is involved. Good luck

This is what worked for me, First clean the wound, as long as he hasn't gone thru the skin and hit muscle, or bone let it air out and scab over, after it has a scab, or a thin membrane covering the wound, it can be covered with an ointment to help keep it from infection. Cover it with a non-stick gauze bandage, and nature will take it from there.

Anyway, I hope hubby is ok. Make sure there are no rocks in his skin that it's completely cleaned out, It will probally look nasty for a while, Hope you get your answer. :)
