well, based on what i've read from his suicide note, i guess he did it coz he was sick of living.. he said 60+ was enough already.. he's had it with life and he didn't see the point of going on.. he's had his go at life and there was nothing else for him to do.. i think he was depressed and bitter.. read somewhere that he shot himself right after a phonecall to his wife.. she said that she heard the sound of the gun click.. well, u can get the rest of the detail of his note from the rolling stones mag/website.. they were the ones who published it.

I agree with the answers posted that pointed to Thompson's terminal illness. It has been stated that the overriding motivation to take his own life was the threat of physical suffering.
I will just add a link to a web page that goes into some detail of his life, including his death and insight into the cause:

Well, he was pretty out there by the time he committed suicide, and probably didn't expect to live that long, it sounds like he didn't have much expectation to live past 50. The only reason he gave was his suicide note: Note Title: "Football Season Is Over" "No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun -- for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax -- This won't hurt."

I think he wanted to be in control of himself for the first, last, and only time in his life of being out of control.

Presumably, he had become depressed and desperate, so suicide seemed the best alternative. I tend to disagree with that sort of behavior.
