I put a new spin on it FOR A REASON! And so far, you are all wrong, and you haven't put WHY it is right, anyway.

Some of the saddest people I have ever met were actually very funny people! In school we had a class clowns almost in every grade. They could make you laugh and feel good, but when you seen them alone the mask comes off and you can see that they really hurt inside.
Circus clowns are mostly people who hide behind there face paint and wigs, because their pain is so great. When they put on a happy face and make people laugh, it eases their pain.
We all wear masks from time to time to hide the pain we feel inside. Whether it's a clown's mask, a wig, cosmetics, or just a constant pasted on smile. We all have pain.
Yet, much like Halloween or a masquerade, we can become whomever we want to be and we can forget the pain and pretend we are someone else - happy, free, and alive! Even if it only for a short while.
But clowns have found a way to relieve their pain, as have I. Make other people laugh and feel good to be alive and then you will feel better about yourself for having made someone else laugh and feel good.
"Laugh, and the world will laugh with you; cry, and you cry alone"!
After all, "laughter doth a body good, like medicine". It really works!

Actually, the quote is: "Some of the happiest people you know are the saddest people you WILL NEVER meet." by Jamie Hagberg. Could put a whole new spin on the meaning.

People put happy faces on to save the drama where really deep inside they are sad...also some of the happiest people are the saddest people because all the happiness will make you sad like your not normal....I think that because my friend was always happy and then one day she just broke out in tears telling me everything that made her sad and why she pretended to be happy.....I think the second reason because being happy all the time and seeing that are your friends aren't may make you sad...and your friends might just get mad at you becuase there sad and your not showing any sympathy becuase you are always happy and that may make you sad........

I'm reading a biography by Marie Osmond, and she says she often put on a false smile when really terrible things were going on behind the scenes of the shows she was on. Health problems, critical people, etc. Every one of us can put on a show of being happy, when inside we would rather just cry it all out. One opera "Il Pagliacci" about a clown who had a very tragic personal life is another example. And say, didn't you ever see "Dumbo"? I suspect it is more of a defense mechanism to smile, a sort of protection for ourselves. It may also be more commonly used in Great Britain with those who believe you must remain polite in public at all costs.

People can come off as looking happy, due to wealth or popularity, but deep inside, they really just want to change who they are.
Does it mean that some people are happy until they meet you? Then they are sad because you're a drag to be around?
My answer is correct because it makes sense! I leave some happy people sad after I've met them ... especially when I'm in a bad mood :)

Because the happiest people you will meet actully appreciate what they have and have had a long hard life getting what they got. Their lives are not the best but they make the best of them.

someone appears happy- you think you know them well- they seem to have it all together but when something happens and you realize the sadness in their lives, it is sometimes like meeting that person anew- it puts their life in a new perspective and they can be a different person in your eyes because now you are meeting who they really are even though you felt like you already knew them
Addition: regarding the above answer: same principle basically- you think you know them- the happy person on the outside- but they keep their sadness hidden and you will never really meet who they really are

Looks can be deceiving. A person may put on a happy face to society, but on the inside, they are an emotional wreck.

The people are happy because they are ignorant of sad things. So it is real sad that they are happy even if they get made fun of or wronged in any way.
