First off, WAY TO SUPPORT YOUR KID'S INTEREST IN MUSIC!!! Learning to play guitar at his age will be a major deal in his adult life. One who can play guitar can make friends anywhere. Learning while YOUNG is so much easier then when an adult. I know...I'm learning to play bass myself right now.
Acustic is the way to go. Electric strings are MUCH harder to hold down.
I would go with finding a teacher who can give him private lessons to begin with. There are MANY books, cd's, dvd's, etc out there, but one on one would be good for him as a young beginner.
Better yet, take lessons WITH HIM and then you can practice and play together.
Ask the teacher about how much to spend on a beginner guitar. I know you can get a smaller sized version and they aren't too expensive. He will certainly work his way up to bigger and better guitars in no time.
Keep on Rockin!!!

An acoustic guitar would probably be best to learn on because with an electric guitar you would have to buy an amp to go with it so you could hear it and lots of other stuff like that. Also, I think lessons would be better for your 8 year old than a DVD or something like that because an actual person sitting in front of your son would be more patient and stuff like that. But lessons do kind of cost alot, it depends where you want to get them done at and where you live. Any beginning guitar might be good for your son, I don't really know a specific type of guitar. Well, I hope I helped you in your situation! Good luck to your son!

Acoustic will teach him the basics, as well as establish his ability to hear chords and such .... I would buy him a guitar from Walmart/Target for starters to make sure his interest isn't fleeting, then if it seems genuine, move on from there. I wouldn't get him all plugged into electric yet, give him some time with lessons and such, so her can learn to read sheet music and understand the basics. Best advice I know .....

even a guitar from a store like target or walmart would be a great instrument from him to learn on.
at his age, i would imagine that lessons would be better.
if you want to make sure he starts out with a good guitar, check with a local music store and whom ever could give lessons about what they recommend, and if they have any used guitars.
i would have him start out on the acoustic, there are kid sized, or short scale guitars that would also be great.
a keyboard might be great as well, and can be found pretty cheap. it might encourage family jam sessions.

Check out zzounds.com for a large selection of various types of guitars. You can even ask an expert on there for advice. It is great that your son wants to learn to play. I would suggest that you actually take him to lessons to learn. It would be the best way. Good luck!

i dont think it really matters if u learn how to play the acoustic/electric guitar first....i play both and they are really good instruments to play..i also play the cello.......
i take guitar lessons so my opinion is to learn from someone that is fairly professional at either....
there are plenty of guitars out there for what u are looking for...
plz do not go online to shop for guitars..
thats what i did and mine sucks...lol
so go to a guitar store and talk to someone that looks like they no what there talking about...
good luck to your son..they are good instruments

How about "climb every mountain" from the sound of music? Or "You'll Never Walk Alone" (song), an American pop standard, from the Carousel musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II?

Do not get a classical! That's what I got, and it is close to impossible to paly cords because of the wide fret board. Acoustic is a good choice.

It doesn't matter which one. Stop being so cheap and get him both and a piano. Encourage his passion to learn music by helping him ... You will be rewarded in the end because your boy will thank you for being a good parent ...
