Can we handle the truth??

Towards the end of the 2005-2006 NBA regular season
all time assist great and current ABC Analyst Marc Jackson
remarked that, "Kobe Bryant will go down as the greatest
basketball player of all times". Perhaps the biggest credit to
Kobe's talents is that there was not as big of an uproar as one
might expected when ranking a current player above the legacies
of Magic, Kareem, Wilt and of course the man that is currently
widely regarded as the 'greatest'. Michael Jordan. The truth is
as human beings we all like to look at the past and gasp in awe
because the past is brought to us in clips and articles
and commentaries. Most of the younger generation of basketball
fans don't truly know how good of a perimeter player Jordan was
at age 26 or what Jordan did during the 88 season. They only
see clips of a magestic Michael flying high with that now patented
tongue hanging out. They don't see Michael's struggles during the
89 playoffs against Detroit, they don't see Michael's inability or
unwillingness to pass during his mid twenties as he threw up 26-30
shots a game nightly. Perhaps because they don't see these things
they also failed to see the obvious. Kobe
Bryant will surpass Michael Jordan at the rate that he is going. It is
not 'perspective' or 'opinion' from a Kobe Bryant fan, it is simple
basketball common sense. At age 27 Kobe Bryant is greater then
a 27 year old Michael ever was. Kobe is the better shooter, he has
more endurance and is the more fluid dribbler. Yes, the similarities
are eerie. Kobe and Michael will bring the ball down the court the same
way, they will elevate to same heights as they leave defenders looking up
in dismay, and of course in the clutch they will prove ADIDAS's marketing
slogan, 'Impossible Is Nothing'. Of course if people took the time to dissect
and anaylze they will suddenly realize that Kobe do dribble the ball down
court in the same fasion as Jordan, except Bryant does it with a little bit more
grace. More like a running cheetah as oppose to a running lion. Yes, Bryant
does shoot that beautiful jumper in similar ways to Jordan except that Bryant
does it a few feet further out, and yes Bryant does elevate and drive to the rim in
similar fashion as Jordan except that Bryant finishes with that tiny bit more of
grace and style. Bryant will also 'mimic' Jordan in another sense in that he will
make bounds and leaps of improvement year to year that only Michael had done.
A 27 year old Michael compared to a 33 year old Michael is no comparison at all.
The 33 year old Michael was a true master of the game. We will see the same
trend from Bryant. At age 33 Bryant will so elevate above his current status that
we will see a mockery of his former self.
What's the reason for this predication?
What is to say Kobe will not go down the roads of Carter and Mcgrady? The
roads of false contentment and injuries? When it comes to physical perfection
Bryant is the model of that for basketball. The words 'for basketball' should be
emphasized in that no Kobe does not have the best 'body' in the league or the
biggest muscles. Yes Ben Wallace make Kobe Bryant look like a high school kid
again and yes Lebron James is probably the fittest 21 year old in the history of this
league. Neither of the two have that basketball body in which only so very few had
achieved. A basketball player perfectly designed is not ripping with biceps or with
chests of Hercules. Shaquille Oneal might be the perfect example of that. Oneal
is considered the greatest force to play this game in terms of sheer size and strength.
In his prime that size and strength render him almost unstoppable, yet at age 34( a age
in which Jordan was still winning championships while scoring 30+ a night with ease)
Shaq is clearly running out of gas and sliding into obscurity.
A basketball player is sleek, slender and lean with that runner's
body of tightly corded muscles to provide the
future stamina that all great ones need when you're 35 years old and no longer
the 'flash' that you once were. Aside from the physicality, Kobe Bryant also have
something far more important. Hunger. Bryant once said that , 'I am playing against
the legends of all times' and he meant every word. For Kobe finishing his career
at anything less then the greatest of all times will be considered a failure. Towards the
end of a much hyped matchup between Kobe's Lakers and Lebron's Cavs this season
the difference between Kobe and the rest of the league became apparant. With the game
winding down, and Kobe and Lebron running side by side we see the sudden charge come
over Bryant. It's in his eyes. James's eyes were tightly focused in concentration as expected
of an star in this league coming down crunch down, but Kobe's eyes suddenly seemed to
be blazing with intensity and a inner fury that was downright frightening.
In that instant even though
there was still 49 seconds left in the game, it was already over. Bryant went on to drill
three consecutive jumpers over Lebron to take home the victory. Bryant's will can move
mountains, it is that same will and hunger in which O'Neal ran away from. O'neal is like a kid
in a way that he cannot comprehend and focus on the long run and only like to focus in the
present. O'neal wanted to be the 'man' of his team and with Bryant rushing into his prime
it is obvious that he can longer do that. In sunny Florida awaits the ultimate of ironies, a
6'3 guard by the name of Dwyane Wade. A lesser Kobe Bryant in many extents, he have
made the Heat his team and O'Neal still ended up inevitably playing sidekick, except not
to the player that scored 81 points in one game but to a smaller version. Yes O'Neal
is in the Finals, but in the long run Bryant will win more rings. It is not so hard to build
around Bryant, with free agents coming up in droves a few more pieces and the Lakers
are right back in the Finals. Or perhaps we will see Bryant do the impossible, win
a championship by himself with no supporting cast to speak of.
THE NBA ON HIS SHOULDERS
The Lakers are the #1 road attendance team in the NBA, the Lakers have the highest
TV ratings as well. Kobe Bryant can be said to be the sole reason for it. You do not
watch a Lakers game because of Kwane Brown's brilliance in the post nor do you watch
it for Phil Jackson's magnificent coaching you watch a Lakers game to see if Kobe Bryant
can defy gravity, you watch a Lakers game to see if Kobe Bryant can crack that 100 point
barrier, you watch a Lakers game to see if Kobe Bryant can make your mouth drop open
for the millionth time and one. No one player, no one team in the NBA can match the value
Kobe brings to the league. Dwyane Wade is averaging 26 points in the playoffs and some
of the words showered upon him are 'magnificent' 'superb' and 'Jordan Like'. If Kobe Bryant
scored 26 points in a game the words will be 'off night' 'bad performance' and 'uncharacteristic'
For the next decade or so we will see the league ruled by Bryant, no Lebron James will not
challenge him neither will Dwyane Wade or Tim Duncan. In flashes and doses yes, but
when everything is weighted in Kobe Bryant will carry the league in a way that Michael Jordan
never did. And when Kobe finally retires ten to twelve years from now with a decade's worth
of scoring titles, a half dozen MVP awards and another six to seven rings we will all watch that
last game knowing in our hearts that there will never again be this much greatness, this much
passion, this much character in all of sports. And as Mr Bryant effortlessly elevates above
the newest NBA young stars and drills his legendary jumpshots we will smile secure in the
knowledge that these young stars are filling the same awe in which Kobe had brought upon
all of us. Kobe Bryant never before never again.

I think Kobe is a very talented player and his talent has been better shown with Shaq gone (although the Lakers have not improved with Shaq gone, his game has). But I do not think he should be anyone's role model. When he was being interviewed about the rape case (I know he wasn't found guilty, that's not what I'm talking about), he started telling the police about other players that slept with women on the road. There is no apparent reason for doing this, except that he probably knew that the information would get out (as it did) and wanted to hurt the image of his team mates without directly going to their wives (and the public). I think his "confidence" is mostly arrogance, and although he may be a good basketball player, he is in no way a good teammate.

In my book at 27 Kobe is the 2nd best player of all time already. I don't know how people can dislike the personality of someone soo much that they don't actually know which is pretty amusing to me. Karl Malone might have tried to sleep with his wife she's hot and could have been flirting or something she's a person like everyone else and we weren't there. The only thing that sucks about Kobe is him not shooting in game 7 because he was trying to proove a point. I hope he never decides to do this again. What he really needs is someone like T-Mac or KG as a side kick to talk sense into him if he tries doin that again.

Kobe Bryant is one of the best basketball players in NBA history. Top 15 overall in history I'd say. Along with Lakers franchice records, this season he brung the Lakers to the playoffs where most experts thought Kobe would fail. Instead he proved them all wrong

I am a kobe fan. eversince he threw those two airballs years ago against utah, eversince he didnt blink when he battled MJ one on one(during MJs prime and kobes rookie years), eversince he went thru a lot to become the better player and the better person that he is now. .News to all hypocrites, we all make mistakes guys.

Kobe is going thru a lot,no player has had this much attention from fans and critics other than the great MJ himself. This will only make kobe bigger.

One more thing,to all kobe haters,do you know another star player who can guard the other teams best player and still score 30-40points a game? and win? Jordan himself said there is no"I" in the word TEAM,but there is in the word WIN. He is not selfish though,he is just the main(if not the only)weapon the lakers club.

And also,can anybody go through such turmoil in their personnal life and career and still have the heart to overcome it? Tyson and Kemp succumbed to things like that. Kobe faced it head on. He didnt blink, and hes got the heart to match MJs.

I HATE Kobe Bryant because I think he's a complete JERK. Threw away a chance to win LOTS of NBA Championships because of his ego, threw Shaq under the bus when he had his Colorado rape situation, and threw Karl Malone under the bus with accusations of trying to sleep with his wife. All things that show his character and should have never happened. Not to even mention, quitting on his team against Phoenix this year in the playoffs.

I guess my reason for not liking Kobe would be one that is personal. Not only do I look for talent in a player but I look for one that I can respect and one that deserves respect. Kobe's not on my list because of his behavior and the way he acts. To some he's the best player out there but to me he's just another basketball player that dosen't seem to grasp my attention...

kobe is one of my favorite athletes people hate him just because he was accused for raping a chick but it never went into real court. he has 3 rings always hits the clutch shot is the best player in b-ball. when kobe played in game 7 against phoenix they crictized him for passing it and not taking shots but when he does take shots (and hits around 48% of them) they say he should of passed it more. any other player would have had rants on the media and been really pissed but kobe didnt everybody also thinks it was his fault for shaq leaving but i read phil jackson's book it he said it was a combo of both of them
