In modern usage, the term redneck predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of individuals living in Appalachia, the Southern United States, the Ozarks, and later the Rocky Mountain States. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

Usage of the term "Redneck" generally differs from Hick and Hillbilly, because Rednecks reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture, while Hicks and Hillbillies theoretically are isolated from the dominant culture. In this way, the Redneck is similar to the word Cracker.

The popular etymology says that the term derives from such individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sunlight over the course of their lifetime.

Redneck is synonomous with hillbilly. Like a white guy (or girl I suppose) with maybe a mullet and a mason jar full of moonshine. A country bumpkin. Im white, but have never been called a redneck, then again I dont have sex with my sisters and cousins. LOL. Why they are called rednecks is because they are usually farm boys with the southern sun beating down on them and burning the back of the neck. I'd like to know why mexicans are called "wetbacks". Both terms are derrogotory, but I have never seen a mexican with a wet back. I have seen white country folk with red necks though. So you might want to go to a tanning bed for 45 minutes wearing jeans and a T shirt if you ever get invited to a square dance. Yee-Hah!!!!

It is a "good old boy" who has a shorter hair cut, and that is one of the reasons that he gets a sunburn on his neck when he is outside working. This was especially apparent when the term first began being used more than a couple of decades ago.
I understand that it was originally a Georgia term, but who knows.
But you also have to understand that being a "redneck" also means that you don't care what is "in", you do it your way, whatever it may be. And that you prize some of the same things that your parents and grandparents did, rather than doing anything you can just to be different from them. And if you are different from others your own age or anyone for that matter, it doesn't mean that you're better, it just means that you're "different" and they are different.

I thought it had something to do with how people living in the country would spend a lot of time out in the sun (working the fields or whatever) and their necks would get red from the sun. But then I found this:

A redneck is a man with very delicate skin pigment. Just with the touch from the rays of a hot sun he will blister hahaha.

The girl who said rednecks are hardworking men is mistaken. I guess she thought you were asking about roughnecks.
