When you start your business, you will have to get a business license from your state (if you are in the US). They will tell you if that name is already being used.

Contact the Secretary of State's office for the state you live in. They will perform a business name check for you (usually for free). Many states allow you to check online at the state's site. Mine does (Oregon).

When you incorporate, whoever is doing your article of incorporation gets paid to check that :). + even if the name is used you can still use it as long as you don't compete with the other company. For example I can name my company Apple or Microsoft and sell water. Since I don't compete with either Apple or Microsoft they can't really do much.
