Why do people claim Soccer is called Football? When I have seen it on the spanish channel on listings it is listed as Futbol. Odd how they take OUR spelling of FOOTBALL and OUR Prouncation and make it into THEIRS. My understand is that isn't even how the word is PRONOUNCED in other languages. So why can't you people leave our sport alone? Do you see us coming on here saying Why do they call Soccer Football? Do we go onto YOUR section and say why do you call soccer Football? We have enough common curtosey to leave it alone. That is what YOU want to call your sport and we call our sport what WE want. Also who decided what a ball is shaped like. Where is the law that says a ball must be a round object? The law that would disqualify a FOOTBALL from being a ball?

Because it is football, a football isn't round. And yes, we do play it with our foot, as in a kick off. You need to look up American Football, this way you have better knowledge of our sport.

Who cares? Or more importantly, why do you care? We get the same tedious question a lot. Why not ask the Canadians why they call their variant of the game "football." Or ask the Australians the same question.
For that matter, why do you call it "cricket"? Do you try to smack a cricket with that wide bat of yours? Do fans chirrup in the stands by rubbing their arms together? Was the sport orginally played to combat insect infestation on the heaths of England?
In short, we call it football because we like it that way.

They do use their feet. It's just that there's only certain players who kick it in certain situations, such as the kick off, extra points and field goals, and a ball is a ball. There's no wrong or right shape for it.

The USA is the real football league and others are players that cannot make the real football. So they get mad and ask questions like this to try and get people to fight with.

We can call it whatever the hell we want to call it because we are American. Other words and phrases vary from country to country - dialect to dialect.
For instance, in England a slang word for a cigarette is a f.ag.
In America a f.ag is very different, but feel free to continue sucking on your fags across the pond.
