Well it's because some caribbean countries reffer to football as soccer but in the US when someone says do you want to play football you immediately know they are talking about the one you throw.

It's just for the Americans who may confuse it with American Football. This mistake is easily made if you just read the question from the Open Question section, and the question is a general one like "Who's Your Favourite Football Team?".

Because of the United States. I cannot understand why they called that violent game of their's Football. Feet are barely used in a game. Only to Kick off, Punt and kick field goals.

Obvious, cause they are from the US, and for them Football means some fat padded guys with helmets running like wild animals...

maybe its to save any confusion in case some people don't realise they are the same thing

Because Yahoo is US based, and like it or not, we invented the Internet. When your country invents something, you can call things whatever the hell you want to call them.
BTW, we also invented the phone, which is why the long distance code for the US is 1.
