Well, obviously the people who WORK in any industry make a livelihood (meaning, they get paid), thanks to the existence of that industry. But I'm mostly confused by your question. If you mean businesses that produce things such as craft kits and supplies, then most of the people who purchase these products use them for their own enjoyment or to make gifts, and therefore don't earn a living through handicrafts. Although, there certainly are many other people who purchase supplies from these businesses in order to make handcrafted items to sell.
I'd say that perhaps one of the most important contributions of the handicraft industry is that it makes it easier for more people to start up their own small businesses by making craft items to sell for extra income. But as for how it helps "the people," I'm not sure what "people" you're referring to.
Just a final note to say that the arts, in general, are an often overlooked part of the overall economy and are woefully ignored by our school systems.
