i also would say spray paint them but make sure to shake the screens well before the paint dries so it doesn't seal all the holes. You may also want to tape off the frames unless you want them black too.

If it's heavy, replace the screens. If it isn't and you have or can get a large enough container to put the screens into, get some TSP from your local paint store and follow the directions on the box for making a solution strong enough to strip paint. Then emerse the screens in the solution until the paint softens. Then rinse them clean and put them back into place.

Allmost any chemicals will desroy the sreen. Your best bet is to get a cheap can of flat black spray paint and just paint them. Mask off the frames if you dont want them black. This also adds a little privacy, you can see out just fine but its hard to see in during daytime.
