I'll list up some of the anime I like:
1. 涼宮ãã«ãã®æ鬱 - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)
2. éé - Gintama
3. éæ³é£ã°ã«ã°ã« - Mahoujin Guru Guru
4. ã¸ã£ã³ã°ã«ã¯ãã¤ããã¬ã®ã¡ã°ã¥ - Jungle wa itsumo hare nochi guu (hare guu)
5. Black Lagoon
They are all unique and entertaining! I especially recommend #4. Hare Guu for those who are looking for good laugh; those of you who understand Japanese slangs and culture, you may enjoy watching #2. Gintama. Also #3. Mahoujin Guru Guru (or Magical Circle Guru Guru) is relatively entertaining to watch, although I would recommend the comic/manga version of it better than anime as it is far more hilarious (in Japanese).
On the list, #1. Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is an anime that is capturing more attention, becoming more and more popular among anime viewers. I highly recommend everyone to take a look at this show, it sure is original, unique, and has many great quality (high production value, good characters, interesting story telling, etc). It's original ending theme "Hare Hare Yukai" sang by the voice actors from the show ranked #5 on the famous Japanese music ranking chart (Oricon Chart) being supported by the anime communities.More info can be found at http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/ranking/21680/
Also this will be off topic, or rather, not-anime, but at http://youtube.com/ if you search "Hard Gay", you'll encounter hilarious Japanese TV show video clips that you can stream online for free without membership.
Don't let the name/word "Hard Gay" intimidate you, it has nothing to do with porn or controversial homosexual issues; just a film packed with action-packed, eccentric Japanese humor that will possibly keep you entertained for a while!

some of the really good animes (that i can think of right now) are...
Abenobashi, Case Closed, Samurai Champloo, Paranoia Agent, Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, Cromartie High, Love Hina, MEZZO, Ghost in the shell, Fullmetal Alchemist, Evangelion i cant think of any more animes but a good manga is aria. and all of those shows that i said are awesome mangas too. I LOVE ANIME SOOOOO MUUUUUUUCH!!!! im like su from love hina

Lots of good stuff mentioned....try Akira (best movie ever), Tenchi, Betterman, Metropolis, Samurai X, older Gundam (Wing, 006), Vampire Hunter D, Yu Yu Hakusho, Street Fighter (especially if you liked the game), and you just can't go wrong with Dragonball Z (stay away from GT).

My most favourite anime is Gun Slinger Girls and Elfen Lied.
Gun Slinger Girls tell about little and innocent girls, that abandoned and in the brink of death, reconstructed as cyborg to become assassins for government. Lots of drama and romance, with good gun-blazing-actions.
After all, this anime isn't just about shooting, it's also about the life and the feeling of the girls. Even though they are the toughest assassins, they're still just innocent little girls.
Elfen Lied. Now this one has lots of bloods and gore, lots of nudity and little bit of sex (not hentai). Extremely violent, consider it like Akira but with girls. The story about when in this world, there are diclonius, an evolved homo sapiens (human) that have telekinetic abilities. With this, the main character easily mutilated her opponents in a blink of an eye.
This anime is not for children, I've warned you. The fights in this anime usually ends with organs and body parts scaterred everywhere.
Both of them are my most favourite ones, though a little bit too short. They also have the manga and novel (I still havent got the novel but still searching). Oh, and Gun Slinger Girls already has it's own video games at PS2 (3 discs and I have them all, too bad that the game is all just about shooting).
