I got an eviction notice posted in a public area of my apartment building. Is this legal?

Yes it's legal, especially if you haven't responded to your landlords attempts to contact you. You could try and countersue for pain and suffering caused by humiliation but you'd almost certainly lose.

Yes, it is most likely legal if the eviction laws of your state allow an eviction notice to simply be posted on your door or another place you are absolutely certain to receive it if you are not home to receive the notice.

If you think this was done unfairly and in a way only meant to cause you undue public humiliation, then check the eviction laws in your state.

Yes, the landlord is actually required to post the eviction notice on the front door.

If public humiliation was illegal my ex husband would be on death row.
