Fender makes the "Squire" brand electric guitars. They're a less expencive brand but just as good as the Name.
My son loves his Squire Telecaster!!!! But it does really depend on what kind of sound you're looking for. A Tele will give you a different sound than a Strat. Both are solid body guitars. But if you're looking for a more bluesy or rock-a-billy sound go for a hallow body, but I'll warn you now...those get really pricey.
Also, if you're looking for a folksy sound, go with an electric-accoustic. Those are fairly pricey for decent ones, but they're worth every hard earned penny...especially the Takamine's.
My son owns four guitars, one cello, three whistles (not bicycle whistles either) six sets of bones, two recorders, a madolin and a Mountain Dulcimer. Yeah, we're kind of into music in our house.
His fav's are his Tak and his Pevey that he's refurbished with Duncan double coil pick-up & Humbucker and a maple wood tele neck.

Basically, you want help from MUICIAN'S FRIEND. Goggle it. There are other competitors worth looking up on-line. If not, any guitar between 150-200, is a good deal. Anything below that and it's a huge risk. Sorry I can't tell you other wise. Have fun. Remember the best guitar is the one that feels right to you. Any professional will tell you, the magic is in the player.

Definetly buy a a Squire guitar. You can get them for a pretty good price and they're made by Fender. They play really good for the price.
Or you could get a real Fender off of Ebay used, for probably a decent price

new - Epiphone (Gibson) SG... like Angus Young of AC/DC... real cheap - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/
Used - try craigslist in your area, look for what you want. e-bay also has some nice stuff too.
Guitars are merely tools to make the sound and style you want. Most of the tone of guitar playing comes from pedals and amps, but to begin... I'd suggest a 200.oo Epiphone SG, it is badass and can really be played easily.
good luck fellow traveller.

if you are looking for a heavy sound (Tool, Audioslave)
you will need a guitar with a double coil pickup. ( Ibanez )
if country or classic rock, then single coil (like most fenders)
Heavy bands like tool use 10 guage strings alot especially if the guitar is tuned to E-flat
80's guitar, country, and classic rock tune in standard 'E' and often use 9's or even smaller guage strings
