can corruption prevent me from reformating my computer?

Right click on the drive in My Computer, hit properties, go to the tools tab, and click check now.

Yes HDD corruption can prevent you from formatting.
Shut-down and reboot (immediately tap the F8 key), Start in safe-mode with a command prompt.
type:chkdsk c: /f from the command prompt

in my computer section of windows. right click on the drive and there will be a list of options look in there.
