Hey Kris,
I saw in parenting magazine this month that our babies should be getting between 16-18 hours of sleep. Usually broken down by 10 at night and a morning nap and afternoon nap. At 5 months my other 2 babies were sitting up, so guess that will happen in another month. Has your son started trying to roll over yet? Mine definitely hasnt!

Typically, babies don't sleep through the night until 6-12 months. Babies who are ignored when they need a parent at night *may* sleep longer (or may wake up and not call for someone who they have learned doesn't care enough to help). But beyond that, there is a wide range of normal. Some babies sleep 8-10 hours total in 24 hours; others sleep 16-20. Most are somewhere in the middle.

It is different for every baby-- my son was up for 3 hours and slept 2 until night- then he slept 8 hours through the night at 6 weeks. My daughter on the other hand slept 1 hour, up 2 24/7 for 8 months.
