I've sleep walked when I blacked out on too much alcohol. I don't remember anything. I always wake up in bed...not jail or dead.

I think people who are sleepwalking can be very strong and forceful without realizing it. If you try to wake them up, they could be violent. They have no clue they're doing it. Plus, have you ever been woken up right in the middle of a dream? You feel paralyzed like you can't move, right? Weirdly enough, it's probably the same for the sleepwalker.

Edit: I found this on a kids trivia website: "The main reason you shouldn't wake a sleepwalker is because of their reaction to being woken up. Some of them become really frightened and disoriented. If that's the case, you shouldn't touch them or lead them back to bed. According to Dr. Richard Ferber, Director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Sleepwalker Disorders at Children's Hospital in Boston, some upset sleepwalkers will "flail out violently" if they're touched. So save yourself some bruises, lock up sharp objects and don't wake a sleepwalker."

Safety

The primary concern for sleepwalkers is safety. Although rare, some sleepwalkers injure themselves while moving around and handling objects. Even less frequently, sleepwalkers injure others who purposely or inadvertently interact with them. Rarely is a sleepwalker violent. If a sleepwalker becomes violent, it is usually because his or her path or intent has been obstructed. Many sleepwalkers claim to be acting out their dreams. If a bystander somehow interferes, the sleepwalker may become irritated, and so he or she may act to eliminate the obstacle. This usually happens when a sleep partner or family member attempts to wake a sleepwalker, which results in the sleepwalker becoming disoriented. Sometimes an individual can become quite agitated during sleepwalking without external intervention. Violent or aggressive behavior may result from the dream scenarios that govern many sleepwalking episodes.

Apparently, that is just a myth.

"A common myth surrounding this disorder is that one should never wake sleepwalkers while they are engaged in the activity. In truth, there is no implicit danger in waking sleepwalkers, though the subjects may be disoriented or embarrassed when awakened. The danger lies not in the fact that something might happen to the sleepwalker, but to the individual doing the waking, as occasionally the sleepwalkers get aggressive when interrupted. "

That's just a myth, it's not actually true. It is much more dangerous to let them sleepwalk than to wake them up. If you let them continue sleepwalking, they may injure themselves pretty badly, because they do not know where they're going.

Sleepwalking usually takes place during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, also known as the fifth stage, so it's just like waking them up from a dream, it's no different.

I tell you the truth..it beats the **** out of me..I guess if they were getting ready to walk in front of a car..would you stop them...I think is nothing more than an old tale that has been handed down to us by..you guessed it..the boogieman..if you believe in him too

I believe it is because they are in a very vunerable state and you don't want to alarm them. They could easily do harm to themselves or others if suddenly awoken.
Imagine how you feel if someone just startles yyou awake...what's your first reaction? Retaliation? Fear? Defense?
Now imagine those emotions but already standing up.

Who said this:They say if you wake them up they could die." It is non sense "They can have a shock and die, hardly, but if you wake them up they would be scared and not knowing where they are, sounds more reasonable.

well the other day i woke up in my bed with something leaning over me. i hit it before i was even properly awake. and it was my mum turning off my bedside lamp. (she was ok but sore).

similar stuff could happen if ou wake a sleep walker so just gently guide them back to bed.
