Treat them the same as you would your Irish countrymen.

Where I live, here in northern California, USA, if I am talking about a specific person I refer to them by name. If I don't know their name, I ask.
If I'm describing someone, I give my impression, like he's cute Black guy that likes to talk to everyone etc. If I am describing a person so that another person will recognize them, I usually don't refer to their background at all. I'll describe their height, clothes they are wearing, personality etc. Unless the person asks specifically.
If I am talking politics with someone who is Black or African American I ask what they think the proper PC term should be.

You might try an open and up front talk with the people you're speaking of---get a name--start a conversation and just simply put it on them what you've asked of us-----simply stated--I want to offer the respect of addressing you properly if you have preferences so as not to offend in any way...I think you will recieve open and candid reply and it should settle the matter

Would you refer to a white person as that "white guy" or that "white girl?" People with black, brown, or all other shades of skin color, are simply people. Why not just refer to them as you would to any white person, i.e. Mr, Mrs., Miss, or by the person's name? What's so hard about that?

Sir or Madam, Mr., Mrs., Miss, Dr., Rev. ,Your Honor..... How would you like to be addressed? Why should the color of their skin make a difference? They have names, Ben, Rose, Mary, Jeff, Greg, try using that instead. If you have to distinguish them, ask them what they think is appropriate. If I have to identify someone who is black, I'll just say that. "See that black lady over in the cornor? Her dress is fabulous!!!!"

Introduce your self, and treat them like you do people with no skin color. They are just regular people. Learn their names and call them by their names. We are very intelligent people. All you have do is to treat us with respect, and we will give back to you the same. We all must stand before the same God for judgement when we die. God love all his people. He does not make a difference between any of us. We are all born and we all must die. And I guarantee you none of us will take our bodies with us. Every human body will be buried 6 ft. into the earth. And every physical, mental and emotional concern will be left here on earth to float in space and vanish, when we die and leave our bodies.

Well don't say, "Here comes a black man--hello, black man."
:D
I think that the politically correct thing was said by one of your answerers: African-Irish. I'm not sure though, so maybe you should ask a boss at work.

First of all, NEVER use the word "Coloured". It is not an acceptable word. You talk to them the same way you would anyone else.

By their name. Do you find you have to refer to your other friends by a tag?
