Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

It's a hallucinogen, meaning it causes your brain to see things that aren't there, as well as smell, hear, etc.

Here's a good story for you:

Some researchers noticed that certain amounts of LSD produced a rage reaction in cats. There is a disease of elephants that produces a wild rage and the researchers proposed that they could induce this disease in an elephant by giving it a dose of LSD.

So they borrowed an elephant from a zoo and calculated the weight of the cat, divided it into the weight of the elephant and gave the elephant the grams of LSD.

The elephant trumpeted, defecated and dropped dead on the spot. These brilliant researchers forgot that elephants have a slower metabolism than cats and should have factored that in. No report on what the zoo said afterwards.

LSD is a unique chemical
I'll lose points for spelling, here but:
Lysergic Acid Diethelamide is a tryptamine remarkably close in structure to DMT, Seratonin, Melatonin and other natural brain chems.
Every time you have a thought, an emotion, whatever, one of these natural tryptamines acts as a chemical messenger across synaptic gaps, where it fits into a receptor on the post-synaptic side and triggers the recieving neuron to carry the information forward electrically...
The fun part comes in when you replace one of these standard tryptamines with a similar but different messenger - the post-synaptic neuron tends to use UNIMPRINTED pathways when triggered by an alternate tryptamine...
Tripping: a feeling of wonderment, novelty and newness, because yes, you're literally using new brain to experience what you're experiencing

LSD : Generic name for the hallucinogen lysergic acid diethylamide-25. Discovered by Dr. Albert Hofmann in 1938, LSD is one of the most potent mind-altering chemicals known. A white, odorless powder (EROWID NOTE : LSD generally comes in "blotter" form; small squares of paper which have been soaked in liquid LSD. It is also found as a liquid, microdot, sugar cubes, and gelatin squares, but is quite rare as a "white, odorless powder") usually taken orally, its effects are highly variable and begin within one hour and generally last 8-12 hours, gradually tapering off. It has been used experimentally in the treatment of alcoholics and psychiatric patients. [Where it showed some success.] It significantly alters perception, mood, and psychological processes, and can impair motor coordination and skills. During the 1950s and early 1960s, LSD experimentation was legally conducted by psychiatrists and others in the health and mental health professions. Sometimes dramatic, unpleasant psychological reactions occur, including panic, great confusion, and anxiety.

It's an abbreviation for a substance that was first discovered in a fungus growing in rye. Lycergic Acid Diathalimide (not sure about spelling). It is thought that during weird times, such as the Salem Witch trials, people had eaten rye infected with this mind altering substance.
