She let snakes bite her and was poisoned by their venom. It was a suicide - sorry, I know it's not a pretty ending. The snake was an asp, and she did it because she and her children had been taken prisoner after Antony committed suicide after he had been defeated by Octavian. She was 39 years old, and Egyptian religion at the time said that death by snakebite guaranteed immortality. She died in this way along with two of her maids who were tending to her. Their bodies and the asp were found by guards.

She actually killed herself. Antony leaves her & goes to Rome and marries Octavia. He then hears that this act had made Cleopatra commit suicide. Antony stabs himself with a sword, and then goes to see her where he dies. She is taken captive, she decides she no longer wants to live. First, she tried starving herself, but was threatened that if she did that, her children would be killed. So she convinced her captor (Octavianus (Octavia's dad)) that she wanted to live. With her time in Egypt about to end, she asks her servants to bring her a poisionous snake in a basket. They do, she dies; as do the servants.

Legend has it that she died as a result of a cobra's bite which she in a sense inflicted (she as the one that cause the snake to bite her).
