So here is the problem: No dirt, no dust, I have the right programs installed and a new laptop. Despite this, I suddenly noticed today that the CD drive wouldn't open (I then luckily could open it with a paper clip) but what worries me more is that the CD-rom drive won't do anything when there is a CD inside. It doesn't recognise any of my CDs or DVDs. There is a light flashing constantly on the drive. The drive has always started playing automatically so I'm sure this is some sort of a problem in the drive, not because of the correct programs are lacking. Any suggestions what I could do in order to fix this? Thank you so much in advance!

If this CD -Rom drive is removable try removing it. Check the pins on the back of the drive to make sure non of them have been bent also check the receptacle that the pins connect to inside the drive bay for dust or dirt that may have gotten in there. You could use some canned air (with laptop unplug ed and battery removed. Also if you have a floppy disk that fits in the same CD-Rom bay if you put that in then you know that the problem must be with the CD-Rom. How Old is this Laptop? If its new and under warranty don't mess with it at all just take it and get if fixed. If its used take it back to the place where you bought it they might be able to troubleshoot the problem better as they may have parts that can be swapped for testing. Good Luck. Oh By the way does the operating system even see the drive anymore?

I wish I could help you. I have a 2 year old dell and it has two CD drives and the top one has stopped working. It opens but it will not recognize and disk I put in it. It just quit working but the bottom one works. If you get any good answers let me know maybe I can get mine working again too.

The drive's mechanism may be broken. The part that allows the drawer to go in and out.

This sounds pretty bad... I would suggest you contact the manufacturer of your laptop. This should be fixed under warrenty (if you still have warrenty...)
