I've been using the same personal computer for a very long time.
It's become outdated and slow, not to mention prone to glitches,so
I've decided to finally replace it. I want to get a laptop but I don't
know as much about computers as I should, don't know what kind
of brand is good or whatever. I need advice, does anyone have any suggestions?

You should first decide on your budget and your intended uses of the laptop. If you only have $500 to spend then you should seriously consider a refurbished laptop. A new one will cost $600 to $700 by the time it shows up at your door.

Dell spends the most on promoting their product and their direct sales model allows them higher margins. This allows them to compete with the other majors Lenovo (IBM), HP and Toshiba. Toshiba and IBM make the best laptops and since calling Dell can be a complete hassle should there be a problem I would consider Toshiba or IBM.

Rather than worrying about the manufacturer I would concentrate on what you intend on using the laptop for and the features that matter the most and of course your budget.

Once you have figured that out then look at what IBM and Toshiba offer and if you must compare it to a similar Dell.

Dell runs teasers all the time, but this means people spend more than they intend on spending. Since, you will keep the laptop 3-4 years buying the most appropriate laptop for you needs is the most cost effective strategy.

So, the long and short of it is type "used laptop" or "refurbished laptop" into google and see which site comes and check out the top 2-3. You might be surprised and find a decent refurbished laptops for an amazing $350. If you want new and have figured out the features you need, if battery life is most important, if weight is most important then compare similar models from IBM and Toshiba and decide which one best meets your needs.

It all depends on your budget of course. Personally though I would avoid Dell at all costs. I got my laptop just over a year ago and it gets really hot very quickly, and if I had my time again I would have spent a bit more money on a better laptop. My friend hates Sony Vaio and he works in IT but he is the only person I know who has given it bad reviews. Try Hewlett Packard, I haven't ever heard anyone complain about them. But as I said it depends on your budget and what exactly you want it to do for you.

Seems like a lot of people are looking for laptops these days, well, I've got one for you right here, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115225 It's an Acer with the following specs,

Operating System Windows XP Professional
CPU Type Intel Core Duo T2300(1.66GHz)
Screen 15.4" WXGA
Memory Size 1GB DDR2
Hard Disk 100GB
Optical Drive DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card ATI Radeon X1400

Battery Life 3.5 hours
Dimensions 14.3" x 10.8" x 1.4"
Weight 6.6 lbs.

It will cost you $1,198 but it is probably one of the best laptops you will find under $1,300. In my opinion it's the best value for its price and all the features it offers.

Do a search for DELL COUPONS. I just got a 17" screen P4 with DVD burner , 1 gig RAM with a $750 off coupon. $769.00 delivered - shipped UPS. Took about 12 days to get though.
Try www.couponmountain.com or www.techbargains.com for the codes...
enter the code into the box on your SAVE to CART page at DELL.
I always recommend getting a long warranty on high end laptops because if it breaks you will need it. On the cheap $449 ones (dell B110) forget it. Just pitch it in a couple of years and get a new one.

ok, first off don't go by brand, many people that don't know jack about computer well tell you to get a dell, why are they telling you this? dell has the most aggressive advertising right now.

What you want to look at in a computer is
#1, the guts, look at what is in the computer not the name on the outside.
#2 The price
