I mean it's a silly hobby and it's also nasty. I try not to,but if I do,I at least tell the person to their face.

Because a person that runs someone else down is depressed and unhappy with themselves so they try to make every one else around them unhappy as well. It makes the person that is belittling and being nasty to other people feel good about them self's for a brief moment.
I come from a family that is like this. I don't let people get me down so I have been banned from my family. I haven't spoken to any of them in 6 months and before that it has been 2 years.

A lot of the time they are feeling insecure, and do this to try and prove something to themselves, and in a lot of cases to showoff, they can also because they are jealous of that person. Next time before to open your month to run someone down, stop and think what it would be like to swap places with them.

Here ? no I don't. I hope my answers are not taken badly sometimes.
Outside in the real world ? (well.....in my head I certainly have thoughts " she is a real b.i.t.c.h" or he is a complete idiot and they are). I certainly gossip at timeswith colleagues and friends but tell that to people who are your boss ??
Pure jealousy at times. Last year I got completely floored by a b.it.c.h boss who took me aside and told me " you are so sarcastic and your personality just stinks". That was just because I got on better with people than she did. It was so nasty that I reported her. And......obviously she did not have a sense of humour either !
OK..a little confession here :-).

It's easier to try to 'raise your status' by trying to make those around you seem less likable / successful than to work at making yourself more likable / successful.

These people usually are also too obsessed with how they are percieved by others rather than having the self confidence to know their own self worth.

It's a way for people who are feeling small and insignificant to put everyone on the same playing field.
It isn't very polite is it? I try not to do it either.

I've noticed that a lot on here and other chat boards, they are just cowards and wouldn't dare say it to the persons face.

Yes I do believe that they do it for the fun of it, and that since this is the computer....they will just do it. They feel that the computer protects them. Well, I think we should just get used to it rahter than picking fights with everyone.
