yes... 64 degees is very cold... you will need a wet suit to prevent hypothermia. A temperature between 78 and 81 is usually preferred. The bad part is, you part of the ocean rarely achieves these warmer temps.

Having grown up near the Jersey shore, I can tell you that September was a great month for swimming in the ocean. The closer the water temperature is to the air temperature, the warmer it will feel. In the summer, with air temps in the 90's and the ocean in the 70's, the water feels really cold for the first few minutes. Our skin temperature receptors respond to contrast. You might feel chilly when you get out of the water, just have a big towel to wrap up in!

At least 80 degrees lol or warmer for us older people lmao. If you are younger then you can take it colder than that. But once you get in water you get accuston to it's temp and it is not cold any more to you. So it is really up to the person swimming in it.

ive surfed in 64 degree ocean water... but wearing a wetsuit.
temperatures in the low 70's i can handle, but to truly be comfortable i prefer water temps in the 80's.

which is why we have a pool heater!

It really depends on the person because I was born in the north and learned to swim early in the winter. Ever since I've loved cold water.

The warmer, the better.

Of course you wouldn't want to swim in 212 degree water. You'd boil.
