I had to come off my birth control pills for medical reasons, and my boyfriend has a hard time with condoms...

Anyone have any experiences with birth control alternatives like the sponge, foams or disolving films?

I've used a diaphragm. It's surprisingly comfortable (neither of you should be able to feel it during sex if it's in correctly). You absolutely have to use spermicide with it, though, so it would be bad for you if either of you have a reaction to spermicide. It's also a little tricky to learn to use, and you have to be fitted for one by a doctor. I got mine at Planned Parenthood and it cost about $80 for the diaphragm and the fitting. Spermicide is $10-15 per tube. Not many people seem to use them anymore, though, so the people at Planned Parenthood took a long time to make sure they did the fitting correctly and got the size right. That's very important because it won't make a good seal against the cervix if it doesn't fit correctly. Mine is made of rubber, so I don't know if it would work for you if your boyfriend has a latex allergy. It also isn't as effective as the pill or condom--Planned Parenthood's website gives the effectiveness for perfect use as 94%, although I've seen some variability in this figure. I use mine as a backup to the pill because 94% isn't good enough to make me comfortable (I'm very serious about not getting pregnant right now, so I use both). If you need something more effective, you could look into getting an IUD, although some doctors won't give them to women who haven't been pregnant. IUDs are extremely effective. The sponge is somewhat like a disposable alternative to the diaphragm.

The diaphram is easy to use. There are also female condoms and IUD. Ask doctor but say not to drugs like BC pills.

Better yet, you could wait until you are married to have sex. Then you do not have to use condoms or birth control.
