They sure do. Last time I checked, this is America, isn't it? That would be blatant discrimination.

Being gay does not automatically mean that someone would be a horrible teacher. I know homosexual teachers who are absolutely great and who could teach some heterosexual teachers many great teaching strategies.

What really annoys me is that people assume that people who are homosexual will automatically impose their lifestyle on others. Sexual preference is simply not a topic that is open for discussion in ANY classroom. It's not like homosexuals are in the school system scouting for new recruits. Maybe their goal is to give something back to today's youth and to teach them how to be productive and educated members of society.

People really need to get over their own ignorance and homophobia.

Of course they have the right to teach, the same as anyone else who has gone through the appropriate coursework and training.

Regardless of whether someone is homosexual or heterosexual, as a teacher they are to keep their personal lives out of the classroom. When a spouse of a teacher shows up, they have to sign in just like everyone else, and visits are discouraged anyway (that time is for teaching, not personal life). You will see many married heterosexual couples who are also teachers, sometimes even teaching in the same building, who address each other in front of students as "Mr. ____" or Mrs. _____." They won't touch or kiss in front of the students, except rarely maybe a quick peck on the cheek or a short hug as friends, if at all. My husband and I are in that situation, although we teach in different buildings.

I know several homosexual teachers (of course, it is all kept very quiet by the staff, and a few parents who have caught on because they live nearby and have met the partner), all of whom have long-term partners (relationships measured in years). They are extremely good teachers, and nobody who knows actually really cares that they are homosexual. On those rare occasions where their partners have had to stop by to drop off stuff like doctor's prescriptions or "gee, I forgot my keys," type stuff, if you watched them interact you would never guess they were anything other than platonic friends.

Don't you mean "Should we take away the rights of gay people to teach young children?", because they have the right, the same as poor people, foreign people, disabled people and anyone else who has the qualifications to do the job, which is to teach.

I do not know if you are querying your own beliefs or researching a paper, but the implied assumption in this question is that gayness is akin to either pedophilia or a contagious corruption, and that assumption is offensive to humanity, not just gay people.

Well now I just to say this NOOOOO!.
I am sorry people but I am old and I still believe that gay is a sickness. They should not be allowed to teach anything at all.
They should how ever stay in the closet where they belong. If they want to be that way so have it but do not push it on the rest of us it is a sick thing.

Pardon? What are the negative ramifications of being gay and teaching children????

I really think you should look up the word homosexual in the dictionary, as you clearly do not understand the meaning of the term.

Psychology: For the record, last time I checked, I wasn't in America. Massive assumption, but predictable.

just last week, a teacher at a nearby school was arrested for activites linked to the kkk, neo nazi movement, and something having to do with lots, i mean, lots of guns. if that shithead can be a teacher, then, yes, anyone has the right to be a teacher. i would rejoice at my child having a teacher who was kind, caring, motivated, dedicated, creative in their teaching, and believed that all children can succeed. gay, straight, catholic, protestant, yellow, blue, or even kkk. because you should be teaching the subject content, not preaching a life view.

why wouldn't they? Sexual prefference has nothing to do with teaching young children and sharing knowledge. The children wouldn't even know that he was gay unless the parents chose to share that info and why would they. Unless your kids go to a catholic school taught by nuns, I garantee the teacher is having sex in his/her private life. Thats exactly what it is, PRIVATE. None of any ones business any how!

Sure, why not? They're not "recruiting" or somehow convincing any kids that they should be gay. It doesn't work like that. Further, just because a person's gay doesn't make them a pedophile. Pedophiles are people who like kids in a sexual way. Some are gay, but many are not.

Considering how bad the schools are right now, maybe we should take every teacher we can get.
