talk to your student advisor or someone on the faculty and get thier input. then decide if you are going to use it for more than what is just the bare bones.you can always buy one with bigger monitor or memory or hard drive or many other things. but make sure when you purchase you get one that won't be obsolete before you are done with school. i would strogly recommend one with a 64 bit processor and my preference is AMD. lower power consumption, lower operating temperatures, and lower price.

good luck

I reccomend the following:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834115225 which is an Acer laptop with the following specs:

Operating System Windows XP Professional
CPU Type Intel Core Duo T2300(1.66GHz)
Screen 15.4" WXGA
Memory Size 1GB DDR2
Hard Disk 100GB
Optical Drive DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card ATI Radeon X1400
Video Memory 128MB
Communication Modem, Gigabit LAN and WLAN
Battery Life 3.5 hours
Dimensions 14.3" x 10.8" x 1.4"
Weight 6.6 lbs.
Tech Intel Centrino Duo Mobile Technology

It's only $1,189, it isn't the cheapest laptop you'll find but it is one that offers great features at a great price and is far more powerful than a bargain $600 laptop. In other words, it should last you your entire college career (if you aren't into heavy gaming on your laptops).
