Chlorox is not even strong enough. It's only like -- 33.8%
total chlorine availabilaty. You have to use Calcium Hypochlorite (Shock) or (Cal-Hypo). Plus, you need chlorine tabs.
If you don't have a chlorinator, then; put three (3) chlorine tablets in your skimmer UNDERNEATH the skimmer basket.
If you have a multiport - (it will have a manual selector on it saying
filter, rinse, backwash, waste, and so on. Here's what you want to do -- !st, turn the pump off and turn the multiport on backwash, turn the pump back on, there will be a small siteglass on the side of the multiport - just above the filter. run it on backwash until the siteglass goes clear note: make sure the backwash drian line is open because if its not, the pressure will blow your lines and the multiport up. 2nd, turn the pump off turn the multi port to rinse, turn the pump back on and run it for about 20 seconds, 3rd, turn the pump off and put the multiport back on filter and turn the pump back on. Go to the skimmer, add 5lbs. (scoops) of calcium hypochlorite (shock) and put 3 chlorine tabs underneath the skimmer basket. It would be a good thing to get some algecide 50. It dosen't kill live alge, but it will prevent more from growing. And water clairifier to make the water even more clear. after you add all the chemicals I have written in this answer, do NOT get in the pool for about four (4) hours. Or else your clothes and hair will bleach out. by the, you'll need to get some sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to raise your ph levels. that is important to keep bacteria down. Before you do any of this it is advisabl to get a water test kit first, if you already have one then, follow the instructions on it and you will be more sure of how much chemicals to pput in your pool. Earlier when I mentioned about the 5 lbs. of shock, that was just an estimate but, it will break the green look you are talking about. The reason I know about this topic is because I am a certified CPO (certified pool operator) .. if you have any more questions about your pool, feel free to contact me at: SinisterSam2112@Aol.Com Thank You and good luck. P.S. Don't listen to too many of these people giving you answers on this subjuct because some of them don't know what they are talking about.

Safe, but expensive! Chlorox & chlorine are identical in chemical make-up.

You should go to a pool supply store and get chlorine tabs or liquid and put in the recommended amount.

Most pool stores will test your water, so take in a sample in a clean container.

Good Luck!

You should actually use the chemicals made specifically for swimming pools. Clorox actually is unstable in pools and evaporates more quickly, therefore, it won't kill as many germs as the pool chemicals. You also need to check the acid and pH balance of the water and adjust the chemicals accordingly.

Chlorine is a radical agent with a missing electron bond hole that is irresistible. Since so many things can get in a pool, it is considered the best disinfectant to use.

a lot of people do this because ita affective against algae and bugs, and you are supposed to let the bleach set for 2-3 days before swimming in it as swallowing the water can be dangerous, sometimes bleach is the only way to get all the algae out and clear up your water especially if it gets green... yes you can put the bleach in but I suggest waiting 2-3 days before swimming...

you should never put anything in your pool that wasn't designed to be in a pool. Bleach is not meant to go in swimming pools. You are looking for "chlorine" not "clorox". Yes, it would be harmful.
